Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ye haseen raat ye bahaar ye samaan

Posted on: December 10, 2010

One of my major sources of discovering “new” songs is the farmaishes that I get from my readers. These farmaishes have enabled me to enrich my knowledge of old movie songs considerably and that has enabled me to share those gems with my readers.

Prakash Chandra is one of the most regular farmaish givers of this blog. In fact, he is like the Jhumri Tilayya farmaish giver of yore. Of course, radio farmaishes of olden days were only for current songs, whereas the farmaishes for this blog is for songs that are not yet posted. That way, the scope for farmaishes in this blog is virtually unlimited.

Recently, Prakash Chandra mentioned about a song, which is an ideal song to listen to late at night, but he has not been able to locate this song. So he is only able to listen to this song on radio, once in six months or so.He hoped that I would be able to locate this song and discuss it here.

His description made me very curious about this song, and I spent time yesterday to search for this elusive song. Finally I managed to find this rare song.

You are right, Mr Prakash Chandra. This song is indeed an ultimate Chhaayaageet song. Very few people may have heard this song. If one listens to this song twice, then from the second time onward, this song grows up on you.

Here is this magical song from “Girls’ Hostel” (1962). It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Only the audio is available, but as shown in the photograph, this song must have been picturised on Ajit and Nalini Jaiwant, who were the lead pair in this movie.

S H Bihari is the lyricist and Ravi is the music director.

Here is this gem of a song. Hopefully, from now onwards, one need not depend on radio to be able to listen to this song .

Song-Ye haseen raat ye bahaar ye samaan (Girls’ Hostel) (1962) Singers-Asha Bhonsle,Rafi,Lyrics-S H Bihari,MD-Ravi

Lyrics

Ye haseen raat
ye bahaar ye samaan
aise mein huzoor mujhko
le chale kahaan
baadalon se door
aur bhi hai ek jahaan
chalo ham dikhaayen
kyaa hai zindagi wahaan
ye haseen raat

ye muskuraataa chaand
ye jagmagaati raat
kah rahi hai gungunaa ke
do dilon ki baat
hai gulon pe nikhaar
aajaa chheden dil ke taar
pyaar ke taraane
milke gaayen saath saath
ho rahi hai aaj
dil ki dhadkanen jawaan
aise mein huzoor mujhko
le chale kahaan haay
baadalon se door
aur bhi hai ek jahaan
chalo ham dikhaayen
kyaa hai zindagi wahaan
ye haseen raat

ae hamsafar bataa
ham aa gayen kahaan
kaisi ye zameen hai
ye kaisa aasmaan
hai tujhe kyaa pataa
ae meri jaane jaan
yahi to hai tere mere pyaar ka jahaan
in fizaaon mein hai
kuchh nashaa sa meharbaan
chalo ke ham aur dhoondhhen
pyaar ka jahaan
ye haseen raat
ye bahaar ye samaan
aise mein huzoor mujhko
le chale kahaan
baadalon se door
aur bhi hai ik jahaan
chalo ham dikhaayen
kyaa hai zindagi wahaan
ye haseen raat

Aah! I remembered this lovely song, only after I heard it just now. You are right, Atul, this song does not come on CD’s and old cassettes, and I had forgotten this song completely, and unlike Prakash Chandra, I have no chance to listen to this song on the radio! I am thankful to PC for having sent in a farmaish for this song, so that we can all just come here and listen to it any time. Thanks, Atul and Prakash chandra!

The fact that this song does not form part of old classics shows how rare this song is.

Indeed. I call him a creator of iconic songs. This is one song that deserved to be an iconic song. It is a wonderfully melodious song nevertheless.

Ultimate chhaayaageet song, I call it.

Talk of warm haseen raats, indeed! I would love to exchange my cold, frigid, minus something raats for one of those raats!

Yes, people living in India (in warmer places) take these haseen raats for granted.

Dear Atul,

You are doing fantastic job. It is very hardworking job to find out such rare and melodies songs. Then search for its audio and video, then find out its all details and above all its lyrics. after that find out whether it is part of that movie or not.

Hats off you Atul. Great.
