Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jhuki aayi re badariya saawan ki

Posted on: December 18, 2010

Music was introduced in Hindi movies as soon as these movies began to talk (viz 1931). The first decade of talking movies saw actors singing their own songs, though playback singing too had started by 1935.

Sound recording technology was primitive and the orchestra was quite spartan in these songs. As a result, the singers had nowhere to hide if their singing was not upto th mark. Therefore one has to admire the actors-singers of those days who survived and flourished under such conditions.

Here is a song from a movie called “Bhaabhi” (1938). Yes, there was a movie of this name that came two decades before “Bhaabhi” (1957). This older movie had P Jairaj, Renuka Devi, Meera, V H Desai, Rama Sukul etc in this movie. P Jairaj could not sing if his life depended on it, so hhe has not sung any songs in this (or any other movie), but the two ladies in this movie have sung their own songs and sung them superbly.

Here is one such song. This song is picturised as a piano song. P Jairaj is playing the piano and this song is sung by Renuka Devi. Her father V H Desai looks on and later the villain Rama Sukul too comes in and watches her sing with disapproval.

This song is a superb semi classical song based on raag gaud malhaar, and listening to it is so pleasing to the senses.

J S Kashyap is the lyricist and music is composed by Saraswati Devi.

The video as well as the audio of this song are quite clear and listening (and watching) this song is a great experience.

Here is this wondeful song from “Bhaabhi” (1938).
