Aaj ki kaali ghataa

Posted on: May 12, 2011

Not all Hindi movies are made by movie makers with deep pockets. There are people who dream of making movies even if they do not have the financial muscle for that. They would look for out of work artists and sign them for free or a pittance, and ask them to convince other out of work artists for free too.

“Uski Kahaani” (1966) was very much a movie like that. The movie makers signed up small time actors like Tarun Ghosh, Anju Mahendroo, Satyendra Athayya, Dina Pathak etc.

Considering that there used to be soo many talented out of work music directors and lyricists those days, they did not have much difficulty signing up a music director for free. Kanu Roy was signed up as the music director.

They them looked for a lyricist. They found out that Kaifi Azmi was out of work. They went to his house and found out from him that Kaifi Azmi was actually out of work. They offered him the job of lyricists as well as screenplay writer.Just when Kaifi Azmi was dreaming of having a financially secure future, he was told that he will have to work for free. “We will think about your remunerations in case the movie succeeds”- he was told.

The stinginess of the makers did not end there. Kaifi Azmi wrote the lyrics and Kanu Roy created a nice tune for it. The makers then wished that the song should be sung by Geeta Dutt, and that too for free. Kaifi azmi, who had worked with Geeta Dutt during “Kaaghaz Ke Phool” days, was asked to request Geeta Dutt to sing this song for free. Kaifi azmi, alongwith movie making team, went to Geeta Dutt and approached her. As expected by movie makers, Geeta Dutt would not say no to Kaifi Azmi. She herself was financially in a bad shape those days, but she agreed to sing for free. Not just that, she sang this song with the same gusto that she was usually known for.

Here is this memorable song from this forgotten movie called “Uski Kahaani” (1966).

PS- As expected, the movie flopped at the box office and none of the artists even got remunerations for working in this movie. But then so is the life for struggling artists in Hindi movie industry.

Song-Aaj ki kaali ghataa (Uski Kahaani) (1966) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Kanu Roy

Lyrics

hmm hmm hmm
aaj ki kaali ghataa, mast-matwaali ghataa
aaj ki kaali ghataa, mast-matwaali ghataa
mujhse kehti hai ki pyaasaa hai koyi
kaun pyaasaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaloom

pyaas ke naam se jee dartaa hai
is ilzaam se jee dartaa hai
shauk-e-badnaam se jee dartaa hai
meethi nazron mein samaayaa hai koyi
kyun samaayaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaloom
aaj ki kaali ghataa, mast-matwaali ghataa
mujhse kehti hai ki pyaasaa hai koyi
kaun pyaasaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaloom

pyaasi aankhon mein muhabbat leke
ladkhadaa jaane ki daawat leke
mujhse bewajah shikaayat leke
dil ki dehleez tak aayaa hai koyi
kaun aayaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaloom

kuchh mazaa aane lagaa jeene mein
jaag uthaa dard koyi seene mein
mere ehsaas ke aayine mein
ik saayaa nazar aataa hai koyi
kiskaa saayaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaloom
aaj ki kaali ghataa, mast-matwaali ghataa
mujhse kehti hai ki pyaasaa hai koyi
kaun pyaasaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaloom

zindagi pehle naa thhi itni haseen
aur agar thhi to mujhe yaad nahin
yahi afsaanaa na ban jaaye kahin
kuchh nigaahon se sunaataa hai koyi
kyaa sunaataa hai, mujhe kyaa maaloom
aaj ki kaali ghataa, mast-matwaali ghataa
mujhse kehti hai ki pyaasaa hai koyi
kaun pyaasaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaloom
