Salaam e muhabbat ka matlab bataa do
Posted May 15, 2011
on:“Kaneez” (1949) is a movie that had actors like Munawwar Sultana, Kuldip Kaur, Khwaja Sabir, Shyam, Sinha etc in it. Most actors of this movie hardly ring any bells for me. The songs of this movie are also not all that well known nowadays, but the songs are lovely to listen to. This movie has songs by singers other than the usual names and that makes for a refreshing change.
Here is a song from “Kaneez” (1949). It is sung by Zeenat Begam. The song is picturised on Munawwar Sultana. Hasrat Lucknowi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.
I may not have been able to get the lyrics correct in a few places, especially towards the end of the song. I request my knowledgeable readers with keener ears to point our the correct words at those places.

Song-Salaam e muhabbat ka matlab bataa do (Kaneez) (1949) Singer-Zeenat Begam, Lyrics-Hasrat Lucknowi, MD-Ghulam Haider
Lyrics
Salaam e muhabbat ka matlab bataa do
ho ho
ho ho
hamen apne
haan
hamen apne dil ki kahaani sunaa do
ho ho ho ho
Salaam e muhabbat ka matlab bataa do
ho ho
ho ho
hamen apne
haan
hamen apne dil ki kahaani sunaa do
ho ho ho ho
ye dil khaaq samjhe tumhaare ishaare
tumhaare ishaare
isse saaf
haan
isse saaf lafzon mein sab kuch bataa do
ho ho
ho ho
Salaam e muhabbat ka matlab bataa do
ho ho
ho ho
hamen apne
haan
hamen apne dil ki kahaani sunaa do
ho ho ho ho
salaam aa rahe hain
payaam aa rahe hain
ye khwaab mein aane ka maqsad bataa do
haan maqsad bataa do
ho ho ho ho
hamen apne
haan
hamen apne dil ki kahaani sunaa do
ho ho ho ho
Salaam e muhabbat ka matlab bataa do
ho ho
ho ho
hamen apne
haan
hamen apne dil ki kahaani sunaa do
ho ho ho ho
ho ho
huyin bhool mein
huyin bhool mein
jo bhi hamse khataayen
hamse khataayen
Khudaaraa unhen apne dil se bhulaa do
ho ho ho ho
Salaam e muhabbat ka matlab bataa do
ho ho
ho ho
hamen apne
haan
hamen apne dil ki kahaani sunaa do
ho ho ho ho

Atul ji,
What a lovely ghazal; once again a new find for me. The words are so beautiful; expressions of a pure and innocent heart on getting the feelings of first love, and requesting for a confirmation of salaam e mohabbat (message of love).
ye dil khaaq samjhe tumhaare ishaare
isse saaf lafzon mein sab kuch bataa do
Remembering once again the beauty of poetry that used to be. No wonder we love these songs so much.
