Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ek dharti ka rajkumar

Posted on: June 18, 2011

“Chandi Pooja” (1957) was a B grade mythological movie picturised with small time actors. The movie itself turned out to be no great shakes, but one of its songs went on to become a timeless classic. This song is Koi laakh kare chaturaayi sung by Pradeep with his usual fervour and Midas touch.

The other songs of this movie did not become that popular, though they too were nice songs on their own merit. Here is a lullaby cum bedtime story song from this movie which I was not aware of till recently. This song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Pradeep is the lyricist and Ajit Merchant is the music director.

What a wonderful song it is. I am sure people who have listened to this song have loved it. This song deserved to be bracketed among the other well known lullaby songs, most of them being composed in the same era.

Song-Ek dharti ka rajkumar (Chandi Pooja) (1957) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Pradeep, MD-Ajit Merchant

Lyrics

ek dharti ka rajkumar
dekho jee
ho ke hawaa pe sawaar
chalaa re
chalaa gagan ke paar
apni basti chhod dekhne
ek nayaa sansaar
chalaa re
chalaa gagan ke paar
ek dharti ka rajkumar
dekho jee
ho ke hawaa pe sawaar
chalaa re
chalaa gagan ke paar

indralok ki sair ko nikla
ik nanhaa sa raja
aaj khushi mein ghadi (?) bhi gaaye
door se bajtaa baajaa
sarar sarar ud rahi chunariyaa
sarar sarar ud rahi chunariyaa
kyaa sunder raftaar
chalaa re
chalaa gagan ke paar
ek dharti ka rajkumar
dekho jee
ho ke hawaa pe sawaar
chalaa re
chalaa gagan ke paar

pawan buhaarega iska angna
megh bharega paani
roz raat ko kahaa karengi
pariyaan isse kahaan
chandaa sooraj honge iske
chandaa sooraj honge iske
mahal ke pahredaar
chala re
chalaa gagan ke paar
ek dharti ka rajkumar
dekho jee ho ke hawaa pe sawaar
chalaa re
chalaa gagan ke paar

This song was fairly popular at the time of its release. A senior person recalled to me that it was often played on Radio Ceylon. He said that this was liked a lot by children of that time and its popularity was like Saigal’s Ek Raaje Ka Beta was for children.
