Dil par huaa aisaa jaadoo

Posted on: July 4, 2011

Guru Dutt, like Meena Kumari , is today known for his tragic roles. But he, like Meena Kumari, began his career playing bubbly happy characters.

Here is a song from “Mr & Mrs 55” (1955) where Guru Dutt is seen singing this song to cheer up a sulking Johny Walker. He tries to make Johny Walker perk up at various places, including Bombay local trains, etc. In fact, much of the song is picturised on trains and so this song qualifies to be calle a rail song.

Rafi is the singer. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar. The lyrics of this song were sent o be by nahm and that is how I came to know about the existence of this song.

Lyrics (Provided by nahm)

Aijee dil par hua aisa jadoo
tabeeyat
tabeeyat machal machal gayee
nazrein mileen kya kisise
ke haalat
haalat badal badal gayee
dil par hua aisa jadoo
tabeeyat machal machal gayee
nazrein mileen kya kisise
haalat badal badal gayee

kal tak hamaara na poochh kaisa haal tha
milti kahin aankh dil ko yeh malaal tha
kal tak hamaara na poochh kaisa haal tha
milti kahin aankh dil ko yeh malaal tha
usne jo dekha to hasrat nikal gayee
sun pyaare
sun pyaare apni to qismat badal gayee
dil par hua aisa jadoo
tabeeyat machal machal gayee
nazrein mileen kya kisise
haalat badal badal gayee

kaisi hai ulfat ki dillagi yeh hamnasheen
woh ho gayee meri, aur usey khabar nahin
kaisi hai ulfat ki dillagi yeh hamnasheen
woh ho gayee meri, aur usey khabar nahin
zaalim mohabbat bhi kya chaal chal gayee
sun pyaare
sun pyaare apni to qismat badal gayee
dil par hua aisa jadoo
tabeeyat machal machal gayee
nazrein mileen kya kisise
haalat badal badal gayee

milti hai aahat si pyaare uske paoon ki
dil mein chamakti hain bijliyaan adaaon ki
milti hai aahat si pyaare uske paoon ki
dil mein chamakti hain bijliyaan adaaon ki
hogaa ujaala ke ab raat dhal gayee
sun pyaare
sun pyaare apni to qismat badal gayee
dil par hua aisa jadoo
tabeeyat machal machal gayee
nazrein mileen kya kisise
haalat badal badal gayee
arre
dil par hua aisa jadoo
tabeeyat machal machal gayee
nazrein mileen kya kisise
haalat badal badal gayee

Atul ji,

A clarification on the situation for this song.

Guru Dutt and Johnny Walker are part time journalist team (GD – reporter and JW – photographer), who are in dire need of some money. The day of this song is the day they will be evicted from their rental home if the rent is not paid. The day starts with the effort to raise enough money to be able to retain their rented home. They are at a tennis match, covering it as news – and the “expected” happens “unexpectedly”. The hero and heroine (Guru Dutt and Madhubala) come face to face accidentally, and it is love at first sight. Madhubala goes away, but not before Guru Dutt is smitten and done in. After that, the only thing he can focus is the beautiful face he has seen. Johnny Walker is trying hard to make him think of raising some money for rent, but Guru Dutt is by now in totally different universe. 🙂

So the song is not so much as a cheer up for Johnny Walker; in fact Johnny Walker is trying get his partner descend to real world and remember that they are to be evicted from their rental home in a few hours.

I remember this movie for its songs, and that contract marriage or marriage of convenience that Madhu bala makes Guru Dutt agree to, she is the one who proposes the marriage. This could be the first contract/convenience of Hindi movies, in true M & B style. Like all movies of its ilk, like CID, Aar Paar etc. this was full of wonderful songs and song picturization.

The discription of character of GD and JW and their situation given by Sudhir Sir, reminds me of the movie “Jaane bhi do yaaro”(Naseer, Bhakti Bharve/Inamdar & Ravi Baswani).

Handsome Guru Dutt! Didn’t like the movie very much but it had Madhubala, Johnny Walker and some fabulous songs.
Love the jaunty air conveyed by Rafi’s marvellous, mellifluous voice. Sun pyaare apni toh qismat badal gayi….
Always puts a spring in one’s step, this tune.
