Masti Mein Doley Jiyaa Ho

Posted on: July 25, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Generally as I keep locating songs online, I keep creating a draft email on Outlook with lyrics immediately transcribed. This list is generally 15 to 20 deep and so the songs that I pick up today generally end up reaching the blog for posting about 8 to 10 days later. But sometimes I come across such a wonderful melody, or an extreme favorite that I have been waiting for long, that I am generally tempted to send it along right away. That is the case with this song. And once you hear it, I am sure you will understand my urgency for forwarding it 🙂

There are many music director duos, that are recognized in the Hindi film industry. Starting from Husnlal Bhagatram, the first such duo, we can name many music director teams of two, some of them who have been extremely successful in the industry. One can name Shankar-Jaikishan, Laxmikant-Pyaarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji, Bipin-Baabul, Sonik-Omi, Sapan Jagmohan, and down to the later and more recent crop of music directors Shiv-Hari, Anand-Milind, Nadeem-Shravan etc.

Now let me introduce an even more rare combination – a trio of music directors. A team of three music directors who have worked together for creating music. The first such trio is identified as Lala-Asar-Sattaar. This is a team of three composers, about whom there is absolutely no other additional information that I have been able to dig up so far, except that as a trio, they composed for two movies that were released in 1965. The first one is ‘Jahaan Sati Wahaan Bhagwaan’ with some notable numbers like ‘Din Beete Ladakpan Ke’ (Asha Bhosle, Kamal Barot) and ‘Aa Jaa Mere Meet Re Sun Ke Mere Geet Re’ (Lata Mangeshkar).

The second movie is ‘Sangraam’ from which this song is selected. Sangraam is a B grade costume action drama starring Dara Singh, Geetanjali, Randhawa, Swarn Kumari, Maruti, Aruna Irani, Ratnamala, Uma Dutt, Helen, Yunus Parvez, King Kong etc. Produced by Film India, Bombay, and directed by Babubhai Mistry, this movie boasts of six songs, almost all of them have been popular hits. One song, the famous Rafi solo, ‘Mein To Tere Haseen Khayaalon Mein Kho Gayaa’, is already posted on this blog. This is another very hummable and melodious song which will definitely tickle the fancy and the memory of the listeners and lovers of the golden age music from Hindi films. The lyricist is Aish Kanwal, and the song is sung with a delightful gusto by Lata Mangeshkar. On screen, the song is performed by Geetanjali – folks will remember her from ‘Parasmani’, and some of the wonderful dances she performed on the enchanting creations of Laxmikant Pyaarelal. In this song also, her dance movements are very well choreographed and very well done by her. Dara Singh is the happy recipient of her emotions on screen.

Coming back to the composer trio, the paucity of information is such that even full names of these three music directors are not available. After doing the two movies in 1965, the ‘Asar’ person dropped from sight, and the remaining two, Lala-Sattaar, went on to create more music as a duo. From 1966 to 1972, music for eight movies is attributed to their compositions, viz., ‘Arabian Nights’, ‘Shamsheer’, ‘Khilaadi’, ‘Watan Se Door’, ‘Chaalbaaz’, ‘Apna Khoon Apna Dushman’, ‘Pyaar Deewaana’, and ‘Saat Sawaal’. After 1972, there are no more movies identified for this duo, and there is no more information available.

I am continuing my efforts to dig more information on this music director trio, and will post more information as I am able to find it, with a request to other knowledgeable members of this blog to add more information if possible.

In the meanwhile, just enjoy this gem of a melody.

NOTE: the only other music director trio that I have been able to identify so far is Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, consisting of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa (also referred to as the Amar Akbar Anthony of Hindi film industry). This trio has some very notable hits to their credit including Mission Kashmir, Dus, Dil Chaahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehnaa amongst others.

I always thought Lala Asar Sattar! How did they choose their names which could also fit as one name? Thanks for this blog now I have this very queer information. As for trio, Mirza Sahiban (1947) music is credited to Husnlal Bhagatram and their elder brother Pt Amarnath.

AK ji

Yes, you said it right; Pt. Amarnath-Husnlal-Bhagatram is the first trio of music directors identified.

Thanks for the reminder.

The music director trio you mentioned above, one of them (late) Abdul Sattar) was my father, the other person’s name (Assar) is wrong, it was Asad, more popularly known as Asad Bhopali who wrote many songs, he also got award for (maine pyar kiya) the song (kabutar jaa jaa jaa). Lala Gangavane and my father were known as LALA SATTAR.

Thanks a lot for this information, Mr Shakir Abdul Sattar. Very little is known about your father and your father’s colleagues who formed the musical team. We will be extremely thankful if you share more information about your father with us.
