Hai kyaa koi suhaawan sapnaa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The 1938 New Theatres production of ‘Street Singer’ is a definitive trendsetter movie that stars KL Saigal, Kaanan Devi. Bikram Kapoor, Subeer, Jagdeesh, Boken Chatto, Chamanlal, Abdul Rehman, Ram Kumari, Nirmal Bannerjee etc. It is story of childhood friends Manju and Bhulwaa. I have written about the story line in yesterday’s post for ‘ghungharwaa baaje chhann’ananaa chhann’.

This song is another duet sung by Saigal Saaba and Kanan Devi. Essentially, it is Bhulwaa teaching a new song to Manju. The song is punctuated with a conversation between the two. The conversation brings out the difference in attitude between the two characters. Manju is apparently desiring more materialistic things and comforts in life. There is a small conversation about the harmonium on which Bhulwaa plays. Manju wants Bhulwaa to get rid of the harmonium and to start playing on the piano, which has been provided by the owner of the theatre company.

As was normal in those days, the songs were recorded twice. One recording was for the gramophone discs, and one recording was the actual video recording for the film. Many times, the two versions recorded for audio and video would have variations. To further complicate the matters, these two singing stars had exclusive contracts with different recording companies, who owned all rights to produce and publish the songs sung by these two singers. The end result of this controversial situation was that there is no official gramophone record produced for any duet sung by Saigal Saab and Kanan Devi. Because of the exclusivity of the contract with different companies, neither could have the rights to produce a disc for a duet. This song, on the gramophone disc is available only in Kanan Devi’s voice, and the starting lines on the disc version are “Lakshmi Moorat Daras Dhikhaaye”. The link for the audio only version in the voice of Kanan Devi is also provided, as are the lyrics for comparison.

The video version is a treat to watch, as one gets an opportunity to see the acting capabilities of the two stars, when they are not singing. There is such an effortless ease with which Saigal Saab and Kanan Devi are playing their roles, underscoring the fact of being great actors besides being great singers.

The lyrics of this song are by Aarzoo Lucknowi, and the composition is by RC Boral. Enjoy this wonderful treat from the two accomplished singer actors. (And thanks to technology and YouTube that we can enjoy this version of the song that is never released on a gramophone disc).

hai kyaa koi suhaavan sapnaa
dhan maaya sab apna apna
hai kyaa koi suhaavan sapnaa
dhan maaya sab apna apna
naahin naahin
khuli aankh mein
naahin naahin naahin
khuli aankh mein
sapnaa kahaan samaaye
lakshmi moorat daras dhikhaaye
lakshmi moorat daras dhikhaaye
laalach ki farebi dhoop ye hai
na pichhle janam ki roop ye hai
laalach ki farebi dhoop ye hai
na pichhle janam ki roop ye hai
ho nahin sakta dooba sooraj
raat ko saamne aaye
ho nahin sakta dooba sooraj
raat ko saamne aaye

(Dialogues)

dekha mera harmonium kaisa sureela hai
pehle ye tumhaare paas aaya thhaa ya main

lekin jaanti ho
ye meri jaan hain

shahar ke tamaam log hamko kitni badi gaane waali samajhte hain

na dhokhaa na ye chhal hai
kyaa pichhle karm ka phal hai
na dhokhaa na ye chhal hai
kyaa pichhle karm ka phal hai
koi jatan ho jaaye
ye devi haath aaye
koi jatan ho jaaye
ye devi haath aaye
lakshmi moorat daras dhikhaaye
lakshmi moorat daras dhikhaaye

(Dialogues)
