Unhen qissa e gham jo likhne ko baithhe

on:“Nayaa Kaanoon” (1965) was a movie starring an over the hill Bharat Bhushan with Vyjyanti Mala. This movie was a box office disasater.
As a result, the songs of this movie suffered. So much so that few people are aware of these songs. It is a pity because these songs are so nice to listen to, and they would have done well had the movie done better.
Take this song for example. as far as I am concerned, this is a gem of a song and this song should have been known much better.
Here is this song from “Nayaa Kaaanoon” (1965). This song has two versions. The male version is sung by Rafi and picturised on Bharat Bhushan. The female version is sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised as a studio/ radio song on Vyjyanti Mala.
The lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri are simply mind bloggiingly good. And Madan Mohan’s music is the icing on the cake.
It is a pity that this song became forgotten instead of ending up as an evergreen song.
I became aware of this song only after I received the lyrics of this song from nahm a while back. And I am happy that I was able to become acqauited with a song like this.
Here is this song. Enjoy !

Rafi version
———————————————
Unhen qissa-e-gham jo likhne ko baithe
to dekhe qalam ki rawaani mein aansoo
yeh anmol taare yeh ulfat ke moti
unhen hum ne bheje nishaani mein aansoo
unhien hum kahaani sunaane na paaye
unhen daag dil ke dikhaane na paaye
yeh aansoo hamaare bade kaam aaye
zubaa’n ban gaye be-zubaani men aansoo
na samjho ke aansoo hain ghum ki kahaani
yeh aansoo hain ulfat ki pehli nishaani
muqadar ke kaatib ka itna karam hai
ke likhhe hain meri kahaani mein aansoo
unhen qissa-e-gham jo
zamaane mein taqdeeer sab ki judaa hai
tujhe kuch mila hai mujhe kuch mila hai
udhar hai teri zindagaani mein khushiyan
idhar hai meri zindagaani mein aansoo
unhen qissa-e-gham jo likhne ko baithe
to dekhe qalam ki rawaani mein aansoo

Asha Bhosle version
————————————-
aaaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa aaa
unhen qissa-e-gham jo likhne ko baithe
to dekhe qalam ki rawaani mein aansoo
yeh anmol taare yeh ulfat ke moti
unhen hum ne bheje nishaani mein aansoo
unhen qissa-e-gham
mera dard-e ulfat unhen khench laaya
nazar jo uthaayi to woh saamne thhey
mera dard-e ulfat unhen khench laaya
nazar jo uthaayi to woh saamne thhey
hamaari khushi ka woh aalam na poocho
nikal aaye thhe shaadmaani mein aansoo
unhen qissa-e-gham
mere aansuon mein chhupe hain woh toofan
jo machle to saare jahaan ko dubo den
mere aansuon mein chhupe hain woh toofan
jo machle to saare jahaan ko dubo den
abhi tum ne duniya mein dekha hi kya hai
lagaa detey hain aag paani mein aansoo
unhen qissa-e-gham
ye aansoo ke jugnu meri roshni hain
andhere mein raahen dikhaate hain mujh ko
ye aansoo ke jugnu meri roshni hain
andhere mein raahen dikhaate hain mujh ko
na samjhegi duniya na samjhoge tum bhi
jhalakte hain meri kahaani mein aansoo
unhien qissa-e-gham jo likhne ko baithe
to dekhe qalam ki rawaani mein aansoo
yeh anmol taare yeh ulfat ke moti
unhen hum ne bheje nishaani mein aansoo
unhen qissa-e-gham

I have waited a long time for this song to be posted. Thanks to Youtube i heard this song, for the first time a few months back. I felt like sharing it with everybody i knew. That was the first reaction after hearing the Rafi version. Soon i found the Asha version too, which has a kind of “Thherao” which is rare for Asha Bhosle.
This also seems like the song was written first and the tune set later.

Atul ji,
NAYA KANOON(1965) was based on a totally new theme.Around that time,Govt.of India had passed a law(kanoon),that daughters will get equal share of father’s property-just like the sons.
This law had caused a sensation in Indian homes. Some felt that now the daughters will become arrogant, some felt that the brother-sister love will diminish. There was, however a section who were happy with this law.
Naya Kanoon story was built around this new law(naya kanoon).
Ashok kumar (Shekhar) wants to marry his sister V.Mala (Jyoti),in a good house, but everywhere they asked for dowry. The benefit of the new law that Jyoti will get father’s half property, does not cut ice anywhere.Meanwhile Jyoti loves and marries Deepak(B.Bhushan) an unemployed poor poet. Her father and brother break relations with Jyoti.Daya shankar(Badri prasad),the father, however leaves his house to Jyoti in the will. While going for will registration, father dies in accident and then the will is contested in court by the brother.
The naya kanoon comes to the help of Jyoti ultimately,is the entire story.
The reason for the film not to click,as you said, was that both Vyjayantimala and Bharat Bhushan were well past their prime. The story line was poor, direction non inspiring and there 2 subplots(one of Omprakash-the munshi and the tension between hero/heroine over her job)which messed up everything.
Even Madan Mohan’s music could not save the film.(Wonder, why Madan Mohan always got floppable films ?)
