Zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai

Posted on: August 7, 2011

“Zindagi Ya Toofaan” (1958) is a movie that had Pradeep Kumar,Nutan,Johny Walker and Minu Mumtaz in it. The movie as well as its songs are not all that well known these days. But that has not stopped me from discussing a couple of songs from this movie.

Here is another song from this movie. This song in fact can be described as the theme song cum title song of the movie. This song is sung by Khan Mastana. Nakshab is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naashaad.

Only the audio of this song is available so I have no idea how this song is picturised. This could well be a background song in the movie. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song and its picturisation.

PS- Mr Sadanand Kamath informs me that this movie has a female version too, which is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Its video version is picturised on Pradeep Kumar and Nutan. The lyrics of the two versions are slightly different, and I have included lyrics of both versions here.

Khan Mastana version

zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
ham to is jeene ke haathhon mar chaley
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai

saikdon armaan lekar aaye thhey
saikdon armaan lekar aaye thhey
dil mein laakhon hasraten lekar chaley
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
ham to is jeene ke haathhon mar chaley
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai

laghzishen hain zindagi ke saath saath
laghzishen hain zindagi ke saath saath
har qadam khaate huye thhokar chaley
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
ham to is jeene ke haathon mar chaley
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai

Asha Bhonsle version

zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
ham to is jeene ke haathhon mar chaley
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai

saikdon armaan lekar aaye thhey
saikdon armaan lekar aaye thhey
dil mein laakhon hasraten lekar chaley

kis tarah uthhe qadam kyun kar chaley
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
ham to is jeene ke haathon mar chaley
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai
zindagi hai ya koi toofaan hai

Atul,

There is also Asha Bhonsle’s version of this song. The video link :

A small video clip of the same song sung by Khan Mastana is also available. Your presumption is correct. It is a background song.

Atul ji,

The word with (?) is correct, with a minor change.

It should read as ‘laghzishen’.

‘lagzish’ means stumbling or slipping.
‘lagzishen hain zindagi ke saath saath’ – the path of life has many a slips and stumbles.

Ah ! we find another rare word’s one time use in hindi film songs.

Also the small video clip provided by Kamath Sir has this following stanza which is not there is Khan Mastana Audio version.

‘aati jaati saans ka aalam na poochh
jaisi dohri dhaar ka khanjar chaley’

The first two lines of this song are not written by Nakshab. This couplet belongs to Khwaja Meer Dard, a major Urdu poet from his famous ghazal ‘Aaye they ham kyun yahan kya kar chale tohmatein chand apne sar par dhar chale. I am not sure about other couplets of the song. They seem to have been written by Nakshab who was a known Urdu poet in his own right. He must have known that this couplet by Dard is too well-known to be appropriated. May be he took it because it suited the theme of the film and of course there was no way he could have given the credit to the original poet.

Kanti Mohan ji,

A very good observation. This phenomena is not very uncommon in Indian Cinema. So many songs draw their inspirations from non film ghazals of famous poets, or well known folks songs, or even other films songs.

Couple of quick examples that come to mind. “Dil Dhoondta, Hai Phir Wohi” by Gulzar for film ‘Mausam’ (1975), the first verse using the couplet from the well known ghazal by Ghalib. And “Jhumka Gira Re Bareli Ke Bazaar Mein” by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan for ‘Mera Saaya’ (1966), taking inspiration from a popular folk song.

I am sure we can list many more such examples.
