Sooraj zaraa aa paas aa

Posted on: August 17, 2011

Shammi Kapoor found his true calling in “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957). The formula and pattern of his future Shammi Kapoor movies were more or less defined in this movie itself. But some more things were yet to be finalised.

Take the music of these movies, for instance. the first few Shammi Kapoor movies had different music directors. “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) had O P Nayyar, “Dil Deke Dekho” (1959) had Usha Khanna. “Raat Ke Raahi” (1959) had Bipin Baabul. A few years later,”Chinatown” (1962) has Ravi’s music.

All of them were outstanding music directors and they composed fantastic music in these music which are remembered to this date. In all these movies, Rafi gave playback for Shammi Kapoor.

The first time that Shankar Jaikishan were signed up to compose music in a Shammi Kapoor movie was “Ujaalaa” (1959). The music of this song was outstanding, as one would expect from Shankar Jaikishan. But guess what ! Shankar Jaikishan did not use the voice of Rafi for Shammi Kapoor in this movie. Instead they used the voice of Manna Dey !

As many as five songs from “Ujaalaa” (1959) have already been discussed in the past. Here is another song from this movie.

I have not seen the movie, so I am not aware about the context of the song. I guess that the kids lead a life of hunger and deprivation and for them a dream life is one where they will be able to eat to their heart’s content. Very modest dream, but for them this target is their holy grail, and is just as unachievable.

I was not aware of this song till its lyrics and details were sent to me by Prakashchandra. It is an interesting song. This song is sung by Manna Dey and chorus. The song is picturised on Shammi Kapoor, Leela Chitnis, Ratna Bhushan ( actor Bharat Bhushan’s wife) and a few kids. The song is written by Shailendra.

Lyrics

Sooraj zaraa aa paas aa
aaj sapnon ki roti pakaayenge ham
ae aasmaan tu bada meharbaan
aaj tujhko bhi daawat khilaayenge ham
Sooraj zara aa paas aaa
aaj sapnon ki roti pakaayenge ham
ae aasmaan tu bada meharbaan
aaj tujhko bhi daawat khilaayenge hum
Sooraj zara aa paas aaa

chulhaa hai thanda pada
aur pet mein aag hai
garmaa garam rotiyaan
kitna haseen khwaab hai
chulhaa hai thanda pada
aur pet mein aag hai
garmaa garam rotiyaan
kitna haseen khwaab hai
Sooraj zara aa paas aa
aaj sapnon ki roti pakaayenge ham
ae aasmaan tu bada meharbaan
aaj tujhko bhi daawat khilaayenge ham
Sooraj zara aa paas aaa

Dear Atul,

Many thanks for the lyrics ! Would you know where I can find a translation of them ? Google isn’t helping much.

I am preparing an article on food in Indian movies and this is certainly one of the most beautiful scenes that I’ve found so far. Would love to tell my readers about it. But my Hindi skills are not up to par…

Thanks a lot,

Claire

Sooraj zaraa aa paas aa, aaj sapnon ki roti pakaayenge ham…Sun, come little closer to us because we are cooking a kind of make believe roti (Chapati)…
ae aasmaan tu bada meharbaan, aaj tujhko bhi daawat khilaayenge ham…O, gracious-spacious skies, today we are inviting you to have a dinner with us.
chulhaa hai thanda pada, aur pet mein aag hai …stove is sitting cold but got the fire in the stomach.
garmaa garam rotiyaan, kitna haseen khwaab hai… piping hot rotis, what a beautiful dream!!
aaloo tamaatar ka saag, imli ki chutney bane…make it potato tomato curry (and) tamarind chutney
roti karaari sikein, ghee uspe asli lage… crispy crunchy roasted roti, then spread pure ghee all over it.
baithhe kahin chhaaon mein, aa aaj picnic sahi…let’s sit under the shade, and make today’s a picnic day.
aise hi din ki sadaa, hamko tamanna rahi… passionately desired of one thing that one day will be like this.
