“Ab Dilli Door Nahin” (1957) is a moving tale about orphan kids. The movie and its songs are in fact so poignantly picturised that I cannot bear to watch the movie. For that matter, I can rarely bear the watch the picturisation of a few songs too.

Finding out details is extremely difficult when it comes to forgotten artists of the past. Hardly any information seems to be available about them. and God forbid, if the name of the artist is similar to some well known artist, then your chances of getting any information on that person recede further, because all the information coming at you on search engines is only on the well known person of the similar name.

These days, I love to listen to the songs sung by female singers of 1930s and 1940s. And one singer that I have discovered only just recently is Nirmala Devi. today, she is known to people more as the mother of actor Govinda, but to me she is a star in her own right.

A diffident soul for most part of his life, Saigal Saab avoided calling or causing any attention to himself in public. BN Sircar (founder of New Theaters, Calcutta), recalls that Saigal Saab would never take himself too seriously. People that he took seriously were the people who were less fortunate than himself. He apparently lived only for music and singing. Everything in life was just for a song. And for his friends. Before he left for Jullundur in the winter of 1946, he met with Phani Mazumdar in Bombay. Phani had produced and directed the film Street Singer, for New Theatres. Saigal Saab told Phani that he wanted to work together again. When Phani Mqzumdar indicated that he may not be able to afford the star of his eminence any more, Saigal Saab promised him that finances would be the least of the issues and that he would take care of it. Leaving Phani Mazumdar to start working on script and start planning for the film, Saigal Saab traveled to Jullundur, in what turns out to be his final travels. For Phani Mazumdar, the story was forever unfinished, for he could never think of completing it with any other star.

Present day movie watchers may associate the title “Khiladi” with Akshay Kumar, but a title like this has been used in Hindi movies for a long time. For example, there was a movie called ‘Khiladi” as far back as 1950. This movie had Ashok Kumar, Suraiyya, Sundar, Indu, Kukku etc in it.

“Sharbati Aankhen” (1945) is by now an extremely obscure movie and very little information is available about this movie. The information that I have been able to gather (and it may be outright wrong too) is that this movie was directed by Ramchandra Thakur and this movie had actors like Vanmala, Ishwarlal, Agha etc.
