Doctor (1941) is a classic landmark film produced under the banner of New Theatres, Calcutta and directed by Subodh Mitra. The music composition is by Pankaj Babu, and the lyrics are penned by Aarzoo Lucknowi and Asgar Hussain Shor. The lead role of the principled and self effacing doctor is played Pankaj Babu. Other actors in the star line up include Nemo, Jyoti Prakash, Panna, Bharati Devi, Ahindru Chaudhry, Amar, Indu Mukherjee, Buddh Deb, Arbind Sen, Tona Roy, Ardhendu Mukherjee, Sukumar Pal etc. A fairly detailed synopsis of the film is available online, and is also partly covered in other songs from this film already discussed on this blog, especially Mehak Rahi Phulwaari and Kab tak niraashaa ka andhiyaara . This particular song is written by Agsar Hussain Shor.
The young man in this video clip is Somnath (role played by Jyoti Prakash), the son of Doctor Amarnath (Pankaj Mullick). He stays with his grandfather, and has just returned from England after studying medicine, and on way to becoming a doctor himself. The young lady in the clip is Shibani (role played by Bharati Devi), daughter of a friend of Amarnath, and apparently a neighbour. She is the love interest of the young doctor. This song is a romantic expression of their relationship, and it comes about after a brief telephone call between them.
The manner of performing this song on screen is representative of the era and the times. The two players would sing the song with very little action or activity (an antithesis to the love bird songs of 50s and later years); not cavorting around the trees, no romping in the gardens or under the waterfalls – just simply being there and expressing the emotions of the heart.
The singing voices are of Pankaj Babu himself and Bharati Devi. (NOTE: On the net, there are some conflicting versions of the names of the singers; however I choose the information from the definitive site of Pankaj Babu’s music, viz. http://www.pankajmullick.com).
PS-Corrigendum in HFGK as well as information elsewhere mention that this song is sung by Ila Ghosh and her husband Sunil Ghosh.
A wonderful song of ‘relaxed’ romanticism. 🙂
saajan badi suhaani bhor
My dear love,
It is a lovely new dawn
koyaliyaa jab kook sunaaye
komal mann par baan chalaaye
karey papeehaa shor
When the cuckoo bird (koyal) is singing
Its kuhoo sound sends arrows piercing through my delicate heart
And the papeehaa plays its music alongside
(The English name for papeehaa is common hawk cuckoo).
chaatur koel badi sayaani
dukh ki laya mein sukh ki baani
taal pe naache mor
The clever cuckoo is a very intelligent bird
Its sound is as if of sorrow, but it sings the songs of happiness
And the peacocks are dancing in tune
chhedat chali pawan matwaali
jhoom rahee daali par daali
rut barkhaa ka zor
The soft breeze touches and teases
The tree branches are dancing in rhythm
The lovely season of rain is at its peak
inn gaalon ki shafat mein laali
madh barsaayen zulfen kaali
jaise chhaayee ghataa ghanghor
The cheeks and lips are wonderfully red
The dark tresses are dripping with honey
As if the thick and dark clouds spreading in grandeur
sajni badi suhaani bhor
My dear beloved,
It is a lovely new dawn

There is a lot of confusion on internet and elsewhere regarding Arzoo Lucknowi. He has two names besides his own. One of them is A.H.Shor and the other Munshi Arzoo. A.H. Shor is not Asghar Hussain Shor as supposed by you. It is in fact Anwar Hussain Shor which is the full name of Arzoo Lucknowi. He had a fourth name also ‘Manjhu Saheb’. Luckily he did not use it in his writings.
