Mohey laage saara jag pheekaa pheekaa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Arun ji,
Waah Waah Waah,
Kyaa hi laajawaab yaad taaza karaayee hai aap ne.

When I read your comment on the farmaishes, I was not able to immediately connect with the song, but when I went back to my collection and pulled out, the song just bowled me over once again. What a rhythm, what a pace, what a wonderful play of words – a song that really makes one want to do a tap dance. Wow and wow. 😀

And I am readily able to locate it on YouTube also.

Jhaanjar (1953) is produced under the banner of New Sai Productions, Bombay, produced by C Ramchandra and the actor Om Prakash, and directed by Kidar Sharma. The star line up for this film reads as follows: Kamini Kaushal, Sajjan, Usha Kiran,KN Singh, Sunder, Protima Devi, Sheela Naik, Om Prakash, Motilal etc. The songs of this film are penned by Rajinder Krishan and the music composition is of course by C Ramchandra himself.

This song is rendered by Lata and a chorus. The rapid pace at which this song progresses, makes it almost a tongue twister of sorts.

Once again, thanks a ton for the reminder, and now over to you for some eagerly awaited details about this film and this song. 🙂

Sudhir ji / Atul ji,
Thank you very much for posting my favourite song of the 50s,so fast.As you said,it has the pace, rhythm, and a tune which gets the song embedded in your mind once you hear it.This popular song of 1953,which sold better than the best and was a hit,has an interesting story behind its birth.
In 1953,Lata and C.Ramchandra were very close to each others.Lata’s Husnlal chapter was just over and she was head over heels on CR.The film industry used to talk about them but they never cared, not even for CR’s wife.
On 26 January1953,a cultural programme was arranged by the Egyptian Counsellate in Bombay and eminent citizens of Bombay were invited.Lata and CR had also gone together. In the function,an Egyptian song was presented, whose tune was liked by Lata very much. She told CR,who made notes. It was decided to use this tune for a Lata song in Jhaanjhar, whose music was in the making that time.
Rehearsals started and just 2 days before the recording, one Mr.Vasant, who was sacked by composer Shyamsunder, came to see CR.When he heard the song tune,he told CR that Shyamsunder also is recording the same tune for his song to be sung by Asha Bhosale.Lata ws upset with this news and she asked CR to immediately meet Shyamsunder and ask him to cancel his song.
CR immediately went there and requested Shyamsunder. The kind hearted Shyamsunder understood his dialemma and promissed him not to use the same tune.Next day,Lata recorded the above song.
Shyamsunder had also attended the same function and had liked the same tune. The Asha song from Alif Laila was ‘Dilon ke shikar ko…’,which was redone and recorded with another tune.
I have already posted the story etc on 22-5-2011,as comments on the song ‘Jaari jaa jaa nindiya..’ of Jhanjhar.

Arun ji,

Thanks for the background info.
And seriously, I am not familiar with the ‘episodes’ you mention in your comment. My impressions about Lata ji are that she has always steered clear of any personal relationships and controversies. In the professional space however, she apparently has been very ambitious and even ruthless, and that she was probably the reason behind the lack of success of many singers and music directors.

Sudhir ji,
I wish you were right.Lata’s name has always been connected with several personalities and there are written references in several books. Why,enen the autobiography by C.Raqmchandra or see the Biography of Lata Mangeshkar by Raju Bharathan,to name few books(there are many),wherein you will find open comments about these.
Husnlal,C.Ramchandra,Jaikishen are few names,in addition to one Cricket administrator, who died recently-I forgot his name, are usually taken in this connection.
These were always hush affairs and will remain so till Lata lives.
However this has nothing to do with her greatness in Music field.

The cricket administrator was Raj Singh Dungarpur.

In a recent interview ( may be about one-two months old) in one of English News TV Channels, Lata Mangeshkar responded to a question by the anchor of the show that she came to know of a few music directors who found a convenient way of warding off the aspiring female singers by saying that if they took the newcomers, she may not like it. She added that the fact of the matter was that she was extremely busy with songs recording to such an extent that she had to decline some songs due to time constraints.

I was not much aware of the film JHANJHAR except the iconic song ‘aye pyaar teri duniya se hum’ and the film’s print being destroyed in a fire.
It was only after surfing on the internet I came to know about other beautiful songs and C Ramchandra being co-producer of the film.

It was also stated in a couple of websites – one being Wikipedia that this film was co-produced by Lata Mangeshkar jointly with C Ramchandra. In another website ( I don’t remember now), it was stated that Lata Mangeshkar financed the film.

I get some subtle hint from Kidar Sharma’s autobiography ( who was director of the film) that Lata co-produced this film. In the context of his discussion on Lata Mangeshkar, Kidar Sharma said that ” ….. I got another assignment thanks to C Ramchander…………who was the co-producer of a film they were planning, called Jhanjhar”. Here, I infer that ‘they’ meant C Ramchandra and Lata Mangeshkar.

Kamath ji,
Jhaanjhar was one of the 4 films C.Ramchandra and actor Omprakash produced together.

Yes, I am aware of Om Prakash being the co-producer of the film. I just felt that in this film, there was some role for Lata Mangeshkar other than singing – either one of the co-producers or financier.
