Bahut khoobsoorat hain aankhen tumhaaree

Posted on: December 29, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The film Sushila (1966) is an obscure entity with a chequered history. I reproduce the following from a comment that I posted ten days ago for the iconic song “Gham Ki Andheri Raat Mein. . .” .

The film was launched in 1962 / 63, under the banner of Shri Vinayak Chitra, Bombay, and direction by Mahendra Pran. Music composition assigned to C Arjun and lyrics by Jaan Nisaar ‘Akhtar’ and Indeevar. The film has 7 songs, of which only one is penned by Indeevar, and the remaining are written by Jaan Nissar ‘Akhtar’. The music of this film was released in 1963. After some delays, the film was finally certified in 1966, and probably released. I use the word probably, because not much other information, including the star cast, is available for this film.

One does not hear anything more about this film. After eleven years, in 1977, a film is released with the title, ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’. The production banner for this film is Shri Devi Films, Karnataka, and the direction credits are listed as Mahendra Pran and Dutta Chauhan. The curious thing about this film is that the music director is C Arjun, and lyrics are written by Jaan Nissar ‘Akhtar’ and Indeevar. Further, the list of songs is exactly the same as the 1966 film ‘Sushilaa’. The names of lyricists and singers for each song match exactly with those from the earlier film. Digging further, I find a note in Geet Kosh, which says that the film ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ “appears to be” a slightly edited version of ‘Sushilaa’, realesed under a new name and a new certificate. The star cast of ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ is available – Aashoo, Mahesh Raj, Prabhakar, Moolchand, Kumar,Sandeep, Uma Khosla, Ram Kumar, Jeet, Dubey, Harman, Sinha, Ferozaa, Sheela, Shabana, K Raghunath, Shobha, Dilip Dutt, Krishan Duggal, Lal Bahadur etc. The names in this list seem cryptic and not much familiar.

Another gem of a ghazal by Mubarak Begum,“Bemurawwat Bewafaa Begaanaa-e-Dil Aap Hain” is also already posted on this blog.

Here is a third song from this film, an exquisite romantic duet that has been sung by Rafi Saab and Mubarak Begum. The lyrics are by Jaan Nissar ‘Akhtar’, and the melodious composition is by C Arjun. Once again, only the audio is available, and hence it is not possible to comment on the picturization of this song. But what a lovely song it is – an amorous, at times teasing exchange between the lovers. The words are so good, and the composition so relaxed – for love, there is all the time in the world. 🙂

I would appreciate other knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this film and its star cast.

bahut khoobsoorat hain aankhen tumhaari
agar ye kahin muskuraa den to kyaa ho

These eyes of yours
Are such a treasure of beauty
What wonders may come to pass
If these eyes would smile

lagi hai yoon hi aag dil mein tumhaare
hum ik aur bijli giraa den to kyaa ho

(It appears that)
The arena of your heart
Is already consumed with flames (of love)
Wonder what may come to pass
If I were to let loose more lightning (on it)

ishaaron se chhede, ke hans kar sataaye
haseen hain mohabbat ki saari khataayen

Teasing with gestures at times
Or tormenting with a smile
Every felony of affection
Is pleasing to the heart

tumhaari khataayon ko hum jaante hain
khataayon se pehle saazaa den to kya ho

I am well aware of your impishness
Wonder what may come to pass
If you are punished
Even before you commit the mischief

jo paas aa gaye ho to daaman na chhoonaa
kahin shauk dil ka na ho jaaye doonaa

It is well that you are so close
But pray, do not touch
Lest the passions of the heart multiply

mohabbat mein ye qaid ye shart kaisi
koi shart hum bhi lagaa den to kyaa ho

(It is not good to)
Impose such encumbrance, such proviso
What would it be
If I too, would impose conditions

nigaahon se chhota sa paighaam de do
tadapte huye dil ko aaraam de do

Give me a teeny glance
Send me a message (of consent)
That may comfort my anguished heart somewhat

abhi se ye aalam hai betaabion kaa
jo thodaa bahut aasraa den to kyaa ho

(As it is)
The plight of your impetuosity is woeful
Wonder what would it be
If I were to aid and comfort you, just a bit

In 1963 Radio ceylon use to broadcast new songs One was Hamrahi/ Mubarak and Rafisaab. other song was “Bemurawat bewafa” by Mubarak in Susheela (1963)
(2) There was other song by Rafi and Talat use to listen…”Gam ki andheri raat mein dil ko na bekrar kar SUBAH ZAROOR AAYEGI…subah ka intezar kar…” may be they took the words from this song and put as the title of the movie. Do you think so.????

Yes, it is most likely and possibly the correct answer that the producer/director used the words ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ from the song and named the picture.

Since the set of songs is exactly the same, it leads one to wonder that it could be the same film. Now the unanswered part is – what is the story behind the re-release of the film, after 11 years, under a different name and a different prodcution banner.

Arun ji has earlier mentioned one incident involving Sh, Chandu Lal Shah, for manipilating the release of a film to suit his financial requirements. Could this be a similar case?

This reminds me so much of “bahut haseen hain tumhaari aankhen, kaho to main in se pyaar kar loon”. 🙂
