Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Aap ki yaad aati rahi raat bhar

Posted on: January 6, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I thought that there should be at least one song of Jaidev from a film for which he got National Award for the best music direction, for discussion on the occasion of his death anniversary which is on January 6th. The ghazal is from film GAMAN (1978) – “Aapki yaad aati rahi raat bhar”. The ghazal was wriiten by Maqdoom Mohiuddin, the famous urdu poet and then a member of Communist Party of India. This has been sung by many ghazal singers but I like the way Chhaya Ganguli has sung this ghazal and also the tune and soft orchestra used by Jaidev to reflect the mood of the ghazal.

When a ghazal written by an renowned urdu poet is sung by a National Award winner for best playback singer and composed by three time national Award winner for the best music direction, the outcome has to be outstanding.

Song-Aap ki yaad aati rahi raat bhar (Gaman)(1979) Singer-Chhaaya Ganguly, Lyrics-Maqdoom Mohiuddin, MD-Jaidev

Lyrics

aapki yaad
aati rahi
raat bhar
aapki yaad
aati rahi
raat bhar
chashme nam
muskuraati rahi
raat bhar
aapki yaad
aati rahi

raat bhar dard ki
shama jalti rahi
raat bhar dard ki
shama jalti rahi
gham ki lau
thhartharaati rahi
raat bhar
gham ki lau thartharaati rahi
raat bhar
aapki yaad
aati rahi

baansuri ki sureelee suhaani sada
aaa aaa
baansuri ki sureelee suhaani sada
yaad ban ban ke
aati rahi
raat bhar
yaad ban ban ke
aati rahi raat bhar
chashme nam
muskuraati rahi

yaad ke chaand
dil mein utarte rahi
yaad ke chaand
yaad ke chaand
dil mein utarte rahe
chaandni dagmagaati rahi
raat bhar
chaandni dagmagaati rahi
raat bhar
aapki yaad aati rahi

koi deewaana
galiyon mein phirtaa raha
koi deewaana
koi deewaana
galiyon mein phirtaa raha
koi aawaaz
aati rahi
raat bhar
koi aawaaz
aati rahi
raat bhar
chashme nam
muskuraati rahi
raat bhar
aapki yaad
aati rahi

—————————————–
aapki yaad aati rahi raat bhar
chashm-e-nam muskuraati rahi raat bhar

All night long
Your thoughts ruminated (in the mind)
And the tears in the eyes kept smiling
All night long

raat bhar dard ki shama jalti rahi
gham ki lau thhartharaati rahi raat bhar

All night long
The candle of anguish glimmered
And the tiny flare of sadness flickered
All night long

baansuri ki sureelee suhaani sadaa
yaad ban ban ke aati rahi raat bhar

Wispy memories of a melody
Joyous call of a flute
Kept playing in the by-lanes of mind
All night long

yaad ke chaand dil mein utarte rahey
chaandni jagmagaati rahi raat bhar

Abundant memories
Like many moons
Descended into the heart
(submerging it)
And the bright moonlight
Continued to shimmer
All night long

koi deewaana galiyon mein phirtaa raha
koi aawaaz aati rahi raat bhar

Someone, somebody
A desperate, obsessed seeker
Walked the streets (of the mind)
All night long
A sound
Kept calling, over and over
All night long

This is really a beautiful number! Another lovely song from this movie is, “Saane me jalan, aankhon me toofan sa kyo hai?…” sung so soulfully by Suresh Wadkar!

Thank you sadanandji
for this gem

Love this ghazal/song. Thanks Sadanandji. I read on internet that Chhaya Ganguli is Geeta Roy/Dutt’s sister. Is it true?

-Khyati Bhatt

I also read on the internet but could not confirm it from any other sources.

I also came to know from internet that she was Assistant Station Director (Marketing), Doordarshan Kendra, Mumbai.

I thought that this Chhaya Ganguly is the same as Ashok Kumar’s daughter. Or am I wrong. Oh wait, Ashok Kumar’s daughter is called Preeti Ganguly.

Sadanand ji,
Congratulations for your maiden write up.It is very good.We look forward to many more informative write ups in future from you.

Arun,

Thanks. This is the second write up. The maiden one is https://atulsongaday.me/2012/01/06/dil-jawaan-hai-aarzoo-jawaan/

Myself and other readers will be grateful if you can tell something about the film SAMUNDARI DAAKU (1956).

Sadanand ji,
I stand corrected, but atleast the date and day is correct.
-AD

Sadanand ji,
I give herewith some additional info. about Jaidev.
In 1933,when he was 15 years,he ran away from Ludhiyana to Bomabay to become an actor. As a Child artist,he worked in 8 films of Wadia Film Co.,but returned to Ludhiyana due to father’s blindness.
In Bombay,he was musically trained by Krishnarao and Janardan Jaokar, and in Ludhiyana,Prof.Barkat ali trained him. After father’s death and sister’s marriage,he came to Lucknow and trained under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.He assisted khansaheb in the music to navketan’s Aandhiyan and Humsafar in 1951.From Taxi Driver,he became astt. to SDBurman.
Chetan Anand gave him his first break in Joru ka Bhai-55 and Anjali-57.The music of both became popular, but he became famous only after Hum Dono-61.
After 30 years of contineous struggle,Jaidev was a tired man with failing health. He was medically advised to stop drinking. In 1986,he got Sur singar sansad award for Ankahee and on 6-1-1987,Jaided expired suddenly.
With 4 Sur singar awards,3 National awards and Lata Mangeshkar award from MP Govt.Jaidev was unsung, underrated and less recognised composer. He was respected as a sensitive and uncompromising(in Music) composer, but only suited for low budget films.

Thanks for the additional information.

Kamath ji,
It is noteworthy that CHHAYA Gangully got her National Film Award (Silver Lotus Award) for Female Play back singers for this song in 1979.
-AD

I stand corrected. She got National Award for the best female play back singer and NOT for best playback singer as I have inadvertently mentioned in the write up. .

Kamath ji,
The name of the lyricist is MAKHDOOM MOHIUDDIN and NOT Moinuddin.
He was our family friend,at Hyderabad and I knew him closely.
More about him has been mentioned on 6-3-2009,under comments on his another famous song ‘Ek chameli ke mandave tale’ from film CHA CHA CHA-1964.

-AD

Thanks for pointing out. I guess, Atul has already corrected my typo error.
I had already read your comments on ‘mandwe’ within few days of my joining this site.

i must give my heart felt thanks to atul for putting up this gem and the one from ‘Reshma Aur Shera’ today.. both used to b my absolute favourites in my school days as they posed a challenge to singers.
and to think at that time i didn’t know who the MD was. only in the later years after i heard the songs of ‘Hum Dono’ on doordarshan and thanks to Chitrahaar that i bcame aware of Jaidev the MD

Thanks Sadanand Ji,
for posting this lovely song with a write up. The comments that it elicited also made good, informative reading- K S Shenoy, Bangalore

What an incredibly moving ghazal. Great composition by Jaidev, exceptional singing by Chhaya. And brought to life by Smita.
