Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Kitne din aankhen tarsengi

Posted on: January 7, 2012

I never watched “Naya Zamaana”(1971), but I read the screenplay of this movie. Yes, those were the days when the screenplay of movies used to be published and they were eagerly lapped up by movie lovers. I read the screenplays of not only this movie, but also that of “Aasheerwaad” (1968), “Kati Panag”(1970), “Bobby” (1973) etc. These screenplays also had stills from the movie. These books described the story so vividly that one could visualise the movie in the eyes of the mind. Much later, when I watched “Bobby”(1973), I felt like I had watched this movie earlier while in reality I had only read its screenplay.

Here is a song from “Naya Zamaana” (1971). this song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Hema Malini and Dharmendra. Hema Malini plays the daughter of rich mill owner while Dharmendra plays union leader of mill workers.

The song shows Hema Malini singing this song in her palatial house while Dharmendra watches her, unnoticed by her. She notices him only after she has finished singing. How convenient. 😉 The mill worker enters the home of Mill owner just like that, without encountering security of any sort. It must really be paradise. Why does one need to dream of “Naya Zamaana” then, if one can live in a “Zamaana” like this.

Here is this song from the movie, which is the title song from the movie as well, seeing that the word “Naya Zamaana” figures in the song. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and S D Burman composed the music.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Kitne din aankhen tarsengin (Naya Zamaana)(1971) Singer-Lata, lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

kitne din aankhein tarsengi
kitne din aankhein tarsengi
kitne din yoon dil tarasenge
ek din to baadal barsenge
ai mere pyaase dil
aaj nahin to kal mehkegi
khwaabon ki mehfil
kitne din aankhein tarsengi

soone soone se
murjhaaye se hain kyun ummeedon ke chehre
kaanton ke sar pe hi
baandhe jaayenge
phoolon ke sehre
soone soone se
murjhaaye se hain kyun ummeedon ke chehre
kaanton ke sar pe hi
baandhe jaayenge
phoolon ke sehre
naya zamaanaa aayegaa
naya zamaanaa aayega
kitne din
kitne din yoon dil tarsenge
ek din to baadal barsenge
ai mere pyaase dil
aaj nahin to kal mehkegi
khwaabon ki mehfil

aaa aaa aaaa
o…o…o…ooooooooo…oooooo
zindagi pe sabka ek saa haq hai
sab tasleem karenge
saari khushiyaan saare dard baraabar
hum taqseem karenge
zindagi pe sabka ek saa haq hai
sab tasleem karenge
saari khushiyaan saare dard baraabar
hum taqseem karenge
naya zamaanaa aayegaa
naya zamaanaa aayegaaaa
kitne din
kitne din yoon dil tarsenge
ek din tho baadal barsenge
ai mere pyaase dil
aaj nahin to kal mehkegi
khwaabon ki mehfil
kitne din aankhein tarsengi

Atulji,
I was lucky one to see this movie on Doordarshan during my high school days. Like you said, Those were the days. Loved to see beautiful Hema and dashing, handsome Dharmendra. ( Thank God I was not aware of their actual age. 27 years Hemaji is studying in a college and 35 years old Dharamji was still unmarried ). Then after my college years, I saw it again as in one of the scene they have shown Mithibai College (Juhu, Bombay/Mumbai), to refresh memory of my college days in Mithibai. I love two more songs from this movie
Choron ko saare nazar aate hain chor
Duniya O duniya tera jawab nahin (Best song of Kishoreda. I will send you the lyrics)
Pran (as a Hemaji’s brother) also had a good role in it. Ashok Kumar (Hemaji & Pranji’s father) was in a special appearance.

The story was written by Gulshan Nanda.

I was a voracious reader of G. Nanda’s books, many of them made into movies. Naya Zamana, Kati Patang, Apna Desh, Amar Prem et al. This, to our mind, told the world (peers, really) that we were now grown up, although we were barely into our teens!

Another great song song in the movie, to add to Khyati’s list was a teenagers delight- was “Rama, Rama, ghazab hui gawa ree……”. I am sure your blog would have this song.

Ye gana mein bhool gayee yeh bhi ghazab hui gawa. Yes, I remember now the situation of this song in movie. Thank you santoshji for reminding.

Atulji,
This song is missing from the list “Nayaa Zamaana”
Just FYI (For Your Info)

‘raama raama ghazad buyee gawa re’ is one of those songs that brings back memories. may hv seen this movie in my childhood and forgotten and only got to watch it on TV years back. My another favorite from this film is Kishore da’s ‘duniya o duniya tera jawaab nahin’ …
