Ae gham e yaar bataa

Posted on: January 9, 2012

Today (9th of January) is the birthday of Mahendra Kapoor. On this occasion, our readers have sent the lyrics of some special songs sung by Mahendra Kapoor. Some of them are well known songs and on the other hand there are some songs that are quite unheard of and rare songs.

Here is a song from “Ek Nazar” (1972). This song is perhaps the only song where Mahendra Kapoor gave playback for Amitabh Bachchan.

Here is this song which shows a melancholic Amitabh Bachchan lip syncing this song while pining for Jaya Bhaduri.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Ae gham e yaar bataa (Ek Nazar)(1972) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

ae gham-e-yaar bata
kaise jiya karte hain
ae gham-e-yaar bata
kaise jiya karte hain
jinki taqdeer bigad jaati hai
kya karte hain
ae gham-e-yaar bata
kaise jiya karte hain
jinki taqdeer bigad jaati hai
kya karte hain

aisi ik raah pe jisse
woh na guzarenge kabhi
yoonhi baithe huye hum
raah takaa karte hain
ae gham-e-yaar bata
kaise jiya karte hain
jinki taqdeer bigad jaati hai
kya karte hain

hum jo thhe ahel-e-wafa
humse wafa bhi na huyi
hum jo thhe ahel-e-wafa
humse wafa bhi na huyi
dard e dil hum tera kis
munh se gila karte hain
ae gham-e-yaar bataa
kaise jiya karte hain
jinki taqdeer bigad jaati hai
kya karte hain

jab nahin tu hi to phir
raat ke sannate mein
jab nahin tu hi to phir
raat ke sannate mein
kaun hai kisko hum
awaaz diya karte hain
ae gham-e-yaar bata
kaise jiya karte hain
jinki taqdeer bigad jaati hai
kya karte hain
jinki taqdeer bigad jaati hain
kya karte hain

I remember this song very well. It was reasonably popular, I think. I’ve seen this movie – it was a SUPER flop (in those days Amit/Jaya had flops like this movie and Bansi Birju). But I did not mind the movie because I quite liked the Amit-Jaya combo. This movie has that lovely song “patta patta boota boota”.

Btw, it was in this movie that Jaya does a mujra – and I remember she talked about it later in an interview saying she hated it because she was not at all comfortable dancing. Some actresses are made for dancing – and some are not. Jaya clearly felt she was in the latter category.

The mujra song is Hamin kare koi surat unhe bhoolane ki suna hai unko to adat hai bhool jaane ki. As you have said, you can clearly see Jayaji’s expressions while doing this mujra. Looks like she forced herself to do this mujra.
I have seen these both movies you have mentioned- Ek Nazar and Bansi Birju on Doordarshan because it was free 🙂 . It was only after watching, I loved this pair.
