Dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye

“Nikaah” (1982) was a movie which was produced and directed by B R Chopra. The movie had Raj Babbar, Salma Agha, Deepak Parashar, Asrani etc in it. Those were the days when Indians regarded “phoren” stuff and people as objects of great curiosity value, even if “phoren” only meant neighbours. Thus Pakistani and Bangladeshi artists were welcomed with open arms in Hindi movies. Runa Laila, Salma Agha, Nazia Hasan were some of the artists who benefitted as a result.
“Nikaah” was originally titled “Talaaq talaaq talaaq”, but on anticipating troubles over this name, B R Chopra decided to opt for an non controversial title viz “Nikaah”.
Salma Agha was definitely a main attraction for this movie. It was the first time that Pakistani actress was playing lead role in a Hindi movie. Not just that, she also sang her own songs.
Ravi, the regular music director of B R Chopra’s movies was under the impression that he had a free hand to pick his singers for the songs as was the case with him for earlier B R productions movies. Accordingly he had planned to get Asha Bhonsle to sing for Salma Agha. But Salma Agha insisted that she wanted to sing her own songs. B R Chopra too supported her. So Ravi had to compromise. His original tune which demanded a lot of the singer had to be simplified keeping in view the limitations of Salma Agha’s voice.
All the songs of this movie became quite popular. Two of the songs sung by Salma Agha in fact became the most popular of the lot and they finished second and third in Binaca geetmala finals of 1983.
“Dil ke armaan aansuon mein bah gaye” was one of those two songs and it finished 3rd in Binaca geetlmala final of 1983.
Here is this song which is sung by Salma Agha and it is picturised on herself. Hasan Kamaal is the lyricist of this song.
The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Dil ke armaan aansuon mein bah gaye (Nikaah)(1982) Singer-Salma Agha, Lyrics-Hasan Kamaal, MD-Ravi
Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)
dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye
dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye
dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye
hum wafa kar ke bhi tanha reh gaye
dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye
zindagi ek pyaas ban kar reh gayi
zindagi ek pyaas ban kar reh gayi
pyaar ke qisse adhoore reh gaye
pyaar ke qisse adhoore reh gaye
hum wafa kar ke bhi tanha reh gaye
dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye
shaayad unka aakhiri ho yeh sitam
shaayad unka aakhiri ho yeh sitam
har sitam yeh soch kar hum seh gaye
har sitam yeh soch kar hum seh gaye
hum wafa kar ke bhi tanha reh gaye
dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye
khud ko bhi hum ne mita daala magar
khud ko bhi hum ne mita daala magar
faasle jo darmiyaan thhe reh gaye
faasle jo darmiyaan thhe reh gaye
hum wafa kar ke bhi tanha reh gaye
dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye
dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye

Oh so many so many so many of our tunes were copies of western songs. When my brother went to the US, he heard many songs and used to think that american composers had stolen Indian songs, till he realised it was actually the other way round.

Ravi Ji was always frank enough to reveal such trivia. He told me a few years back that he created “Kisi Patthar Ki Moorat Se Ibaadat Kaa Iraada Hai” for film ‘Hamraz’ on a Noorjehan hit from ‘Gaon Ki Gori’ : “Baithi Hoon Teri Yaad kaa Lekar Ke Sahaara”.

Although not related by blood, Raj Kapoor considers Salma Agha’s mom Zarina Agha as his cousin. Salma Agha’s grandmother Anwari Begum was involved with music director/actor Rafiq Ghaznavi and had a daughter named Zarina. Later Anwari married Ahmed Suleman, and he accepted Nasreen as his own daughter and raised her as his own. Ahmed’s real name before converting to Islam was Jugal Kishore Mehra, and he and Prithviraj Kapoor’s wife Ramsarni Mehra were brothers and sisters.
It is said that Salma used her Uncle’s Raj Kapoor connection to be casted in B.R. Chopra’s superhit film Nikaah (1982).

But some where it claims that Ahmed was her real father.
Any way…as we know during 20’s and 30’s these courtesans used to have several relationships going at one time. All due respect to Nargis (Dutt) her two brothers and her father wasn’t the same person. Of course no fault of Nargisji 🙂

Salma Agha is now married to Rahmat Khan, who was a coach and cousin of famous squash player Jahangir Khan.

Atul ji,
Thank you for posting this song.
TheTtimes of India,Mumbai Edition, dated 11th March 2012 had published an article titlted “I even turned around a Naushad song and used it”.This was written by a senior journalist Harish C Menon.
He writes in that,on the Diwali day of 2004,he had gone to Ravi’s bungalow “VACHAN” in Santa cruz,Mumbai for an interview.
During the Interview,Ravi confessed to him as follows-
“Ravisaab even would play on other composer’s tunes, turn them around and win laurels for him.For instance,he revealed to me that the popular Salma Agha number,’dil ke armaan…’from Nikah-82 was merely a jumbled up version of an earlier Naushad classic.Just listen to ‘Milte hi aankhen dil hua deewana kisi ka’,the Talat number from BABUL-1950.
I merely changed the tunes of its first 2 lines and created ‘Dil ke armaan’
and Salma won an award,Ravi said with a smile. ”
I was stunned to read this, but then realised that atleast he had the courage to admit the copy, but think of many others who blatantly copied indian and english tunes but never accepted it.

I don’t remember which song, but Sajjad Hussain also was upset with Madan Mohan for duplicating his tune of one song (think it was yeh hawa yeh raat…..from Sangdil). Arunji, do you have any details?
