Blog Day :6664Post No. :20628

Today’s song is the last and final song from a Crime, mystery, Social film- Vishwanath-1978.

I am glad to say that this is the 50th YIPPEE SONG, discussed by me since 14-8-2026 till today. That means, in 64 days 50 such songs were discussed, which has hopefully enriched the Blog in lumpsum quantity. I would once again stress that this was not an easy series for me. It entailed hard work, spending most of my day time and some night time in collecting relevant data like the Yippee song, details of the film, story, other interesting titbits, film scenes in that year and adding short Biographies of selected artists. I must admit that all this exercise for every song everyday also added a lot of information for me too !

Today’s Yippee song is the last in this series. I would like to point out here that there are still at least 15 to 20 Yippee-able songs from films of the 80s, 90s and may be of later periods too, which I did not even try as I was already washed out of my tolerance for hard work. Some other Atulite, who is well conversant with films from the 80s onwards should try to work on this project. The opportunity is available.

Today’s film was significant for 3 reasons. Firstly, this film helped to establish Shatrughan Sinha as a hero-from his earlier image of a Villain. Secondly, It was the beginning for the very capable Director Subhash Ghai, as it was his first film as a director of a Mystery/Crime film. And thirdly, Reena Roy was in her one of the best films to get established in the Hindi film industry. Maybe, because of Shatrughna Sinha’s pairing in various other aspects !

The cast of the film was Shatrughna Sinha, Reena Roy, Premnath, Pran, Reeta Bhaduri, Madan Puri, Iftikhar, Jagdish Raj,Sulochana, Sapru and others, with special roles for Parikshit Sahni,Rakesh Pande, Lalita Pawar, Mukri, Bharat Bhushan, Satyen kappoo and Ranjit. The music was by Rajesh Roshan and the songs were written by Vithalbhai Patel, Hashmat, Rajkavi Tulsi and Anjaan.

The storyline of the 1978 film Vishwanath revolves around an honest, idealistic lawyer named Vishwanath (played by Shatrughan Sinha) who dedicates his career to defending justice, helping the poor, and fighting for humanity.

Vishwanath takes a firm stand against a powerful, ruthless underworld don named GNK (played by Premnath). Despite facing threats to his life and being offered enormous bribes, Vishwanath refuses to back down or compromise his integrity. Enraged by this defiance, GNK and his corrupt associates conspire against the lawyer. They successfully frame Vishwanath for a crime he did not commit, leading to his false conviction and imprisonment.

Upon completing his prison sentence, Vishwanath emerges determined to seek vengeance. However, he quickly realizes that operating within the boundaries of the legal system makes it virtually impossible to defeat GNK, who commands immense wealth and controls corrupt institutions.

Frustrated by the limitations of the law, Vishwanath decides to cross the line into the criminal underworld. He changes his identity, abandons his legal ethics, and hires a dangerous gang of crooks, thieves, and assassins to wage a violent, personal vendetta against GNK’s empire.

While his vigilante crusade successfully dismantles GNK’s criminal operations, Vishwanath’s radical transformation carries a heavy emotional and physical toll: His brutal new persona alienates him from Soni (played by Reena Roy), the love of his life. By taking the law into his own hands, he becomes a highly sought-after fugitive hunted by the police. In his pursuit of revenge, he unintentionally leaves his paralysed sister, Munni, and his mother, Shanti, unprotected and highly vulnerable to vicious retaliation from GNK and his minions.

The rest of the film chronicles his high-stakes battle to completely destroy GNK’s syndicates while managing the emotional fallout with his family and dealing with the police closing in on him.

The 1978 Hindi action-drama film Vishwanath was a major Box Office Hit. Directed by Subhash Ghai and starring Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy in lead roles, the film performed exceptionally well across India and solidified Shatrughan Sinha’s stardom following his earlier success in Kalicharan.
Budget: ₹1.10 Crore and Gross Collection: ₹4.00 Crore.

It emerged as the 11th highest-grossing Hindi film of 1978, running successfully in theatres with massive crowds drawing in for its iconic dialogues. The film is universally remembered for its thundering mass dialogues written by Subhash Ghai, specifically Sinha’s legendary punchline: “Jali ko aag kehte hain, bujhi ko raakh kehte hain, jis raakh se barood bane use Vishwanath kehte hain”. The intense legal-revenge storyline resonated strongly with audiences, leading to highly successful regional remakes like Lawyer Viswanath (Telugu, 1978) and Naan Mahaan Alla (Tamil, 1984).
I find that during the period from the 1950s to the 2000, there was a trend to put a ‘Phrase’ as a repeat in the dialogues of the film’s villain, something like ‘ Mogambo khush huwa’, or ‘Mai Kaun’ or ‘ Kop Kabana’ etc. The villain of this film was also an expert in this. The villain here was Premnath.

Premnath Malhotra (21 November 1926 – 03 November 1992), known as Prem nath, was an actor, director and also a singer. He was born in the Karimpura locality near Ghanta Ghar in Peshawar, (undivided India) now in Pakistan. His family moved to Jabbalpore, now Jabalpur, in Madhya Pradesh after partition & he moved to Bombay, where he was discovered as an actor.

Premnath married actress Bina Rai. Their children are actor Prem Krishen & Kailash Nath (Monty). They are also grandparents of actress Akanksha Malhotra and director Siddharth Malhotra who are Prem Krishen’s children. Adiraj Malhotra & Arjun Malhotra are the sons of Kailash Nath. His sister Krishna married Raj Kapoor, while his other sister Uma was married to veteran Hindi Film actor Prem Chopra. His brothers Rajendranath and Narendranath were also actors who mostly appeared in comic and supporting roles. He was also a close friend of the actress Asha Parekh.

Premnath made his film debut in “Ajit” 1948 opposite Monica Desai, which was one of the first colour films. He got major roles in Raj Kapoor’s first directorial film “Aag” & “Barsaat” (1949) which was his first major success. Premnath went on to appear in many films for the next three decades, some of which were the biggest block-busters in Indian film history. The films in which he played the leading role failed to do well, but the films in which he played the central villain role or supporting role were some of the biggest blockbusters in Indian film history. Some his most notable films were Aan (1952), Teesri Manzil (1966), Johny Mera Naam (1970),Tere Mere Sapne (1971), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), Dharmatma (1975), Kalicharan (1976) and Desh Premee (1982). He also starred in the Punjabi film Sat Sri Akal (1977).

Premnath fell in love with actress Bina Rai during the filming of “Aurat”. They married and formed a production company together called P. N. films. They held high hopes for their films, which didn’t become hits, such as Shagufa, Prisoner of Golconda, Samunder and Watan. Thus, the Premnath & Bina Rai pair never clicked on the screen.

Premnath earned Filmfare nominations as Best Supporting Actor for Shor (1972), Bobby (1973), Amir Garib (1974) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974). But he never got any award.

Apart from Hindi films, he also appeared in an episode of the American television series “Maya” in 1967 & a 1969 American film titled “Kenner Sandy” opposite former American football player turned actor Jim Brown. He also directed the film Samundar (1957) for his home production house P. N. films, which was its production. His last film appearance was in “Hum Dono” (1985) after which he retired from acting.

He acted in 121 films. His last film was Farz ki Keemat-1985. He directed 2 films- Golkonda ka qaidi-1954 and Samunder-1957. He sang 5 songs in 5 films.

Premnath died on 03 November 1992 of a heart attack at the age of sixty-five in Mumbai. (adapted from an article by Suresh Sarvaiya ji and book ” The stars of Indian Screen” by Baburao Patel.)

Here is the last and final song from today’s film, sung by Lata and Kishore. It makes the film YIPPEED !

Lyrics :

Duniya ne mujhe tadpaaya
kismat ne mujhe uljhaaya
mere pyaar ne mujhko sataaya
mere yaar ne mujhko rulaaya
to meree janam kundlee
meree janam kundlee dekh ke
itna to batla de jogee
todd ke bandhan prem deewaanee
preetam kee kab hogee
meree janam kundlee dekh ke
itna to batla de jogee
todd ke bandhan prem deewaanee
preetam kee kab hogee
o o
ho o ho o
arre janam kundlee bhool ke baala
karam kundlee pe aa ja
jo baaton se na maana
vo laaton se ab maanega

ye preet banee kyun dushman
ye pyaar kahaan le aaya
naazuk ye dil ka sheesha
kis patthar se takraaya
kab waqt ka palte paasa
aise bhee mod aate hain
dil ke naazuk sheeshe se
patthar bhee toot jaate hain

arre waqt pyaar ke dushman ko
din mein taare dikhla dega
jo baaton se na maana
vo laaton se ab maanega

la la la la la
la la la la la

uskee mehfil mein dil ??
sone chaandee kee zanjeeren
vo kaaghaz ke in tukdon se
likhta hai pyaar kee taqdeeren
sone chaandee kee maaya
taqdeeren kya badlegee
toofaan uthhega aisa
kaaghaz kee naav doobegee

jab paanee sar chadh jaaye
sailaab aata hai
jab paap badh jaaye to
sab doob jaata hai
koi Ravan ad jaaye to
phir Raam aata hai
jab Raam phans jaaye to
Hanuman aata hai
pyaar agar zidd per aaya
paanee mein aag laga dega
jo baaton se na maana
vo laaton se ab maanega

meree janam kundlee dekh ke
itna to batla de jogee
todd ke bandhan prem deewaanee
preetam kee kab hogee
arre janam kundlee bhool ke baala
karam kundlee pe aa ja
jo baaton se na maana
vo laaton se ab maanega
