The film songs of Mukesh do not even number 800, with the current research that is available, but it is still a great treasure. The voice behind these songs, this person, carries a link back into the soul itself – such is the power and the fascination in this voice. It would be a very tough job, to find a Mukesh song that one could say “naah, not worth the listen”. What maybe would seem lacking in numbers is more than made up by simply the quality of sound and the eminence of rendering.
Think of a film like ‘Pujarin’ (1969). The only reason I came to know of this film is this song. else I simply draw a blank as far as the film itself is concerned. The information that I present here is from the Geet Kosh. It is a Mayur Productions release – a film based on religious theme, directed by Dhirubhai Desai. The lyrics are by a poet named Madan (I find that this name has already debuted in this blog, with one song from the film ‘Bhagwaan Parshuram’ (1970)). The music is by Narayan Dutt (not the same as N Dutta). The star cast of this film includes Rehana Sultana, Vijay Dutt, Pratap, Niranjan Sharma, Jai Kajaria, Manto, Sadhna Khote, Shahnaaz, Bhagwan Sinha amongst others.
The song is picturized on Vijay Dutt, and Rehana Sultana (and once again, a song that is better heard, than seen). Besides the voice of Mukesh, there is another female voice that accompanies the main song with humming interludes. Looking at the list of songs and singers for this film, the only female voice that is identified is that of Hemlata. But for this particular song, it is not specifically stated if she has provided the humming interludes. So just a speculation.
But the song and its rendering, is simply sublime. Listening to it in Mukesh’s voice, that is just an experience in itself. Enjoy this wonderful melody – the voice makes up for everything else that may appear below par.

As far as my info goes,this Vijay Dutt was the youngest brother of Guru Dutt.GuruDutt had 3 brothers,Atmaram,Devidas and Vijay and a sister Lalitha(whose daughter is Kalpana Lajmi).Atmaram was into film direction and production,Devidas became a Professor somewhere and Vijay did his first film Shama in 1961.
His other films are Banarasi Thug,Chori chori,Bazar,Idd ka chaand,Pujarin,Shama,Maa beta,Sant Tulsidas and last film was Jawab-1985.In Zindagi,he made a friendly appearance.
I do not know whether the Gujrathi actor Vijay is this same Vijay Dutt.

I just watched another song, Kaise Jiye re Saathi Tere Bina…. of this movie, Pujarin. Looks like he is same Vijay Dutt. It was not easy to match as I have seen Him (if the same) only in Gujarati movies/plays. He is too young in this movie for me to be 100% sure.
Aap ne to bahut Jaan Pehchan karadi yeh Dutt Bhaiyon se. Bahot hi shukriya.

Vijay Dutt, a famous Gujarati screen/ stage personality was not related to Guru Dutt. In real life his surname was Bhatt, but when he debuted in 1960, another Vijay Bhatt was a famous director (Prakash Pictures). So he changed his surname to Dutt.
He was also a famous director of Gujarati Stage.
His son Parag & his family died in ‘Kanishka’ air crash in 1985. So Vijaybhai formed ‘Parag Vijay Dutt Acting Acedemy’ in 1986 at Mithibai Collage, Parla, Mumbai & currently, it’s a prestigeous acting institute.
Vijaybhai expired in 1996.

It starts at 4.30 pm and ends at 7 pm. Generally about 36 rear songs(list given at the end) are played one after the other with comments from few experts in between. Tea biscuits are served in between. Last time it was close to 200 music buffs who attended to the do. Anybody who can assemble 36 songs(approved by the committee) can present to the audience.

Vijay Dutt has to be Gujarati as he was majorly involved in Gujarati stage as an actor. His bibliography says it all. It is difficult to believe him to be brother of Guru Dutt. If it was so he would have acted in Guru Dutt’s production at least once

May be you are right,but consider the following points-
1. When Guru dutt died in 1964,Vijay had just entered films.
2. it is NOT necessary that he should have acted in GD’s films,as from 60 onwards GD’s films were of different type.We do not know what were their relations.
3. If Malcom Desai-a christian from Goa can become Manhar Desai and act in Gujarati films in abundance,why cant Vijay Dutt do it ?
4. Dutt is NOT a surname found in Gujrat.
5. Vujay Dutt also acted in few Marathi films,that does not make him a marathi manoos.

Vijay Dutt was actually Vijay Bhatt. Not sure why he changed his last name. Considering Pujarin (Dheerubhai Desai), Idd Ka Chand (Nanubhai Vakil) were made by gujarati movie-makers, its very likely that its the same Vijay Dutt.
Parag Vijay Dutt Drama Academy seems to be quite famous for training actors, and is being ran by Girish Desai.

If Vijay Dutt(Bhatt) is of same age as his wife (84 in 2012), he would have born in 1926-1927, and would be 34 during Shama/61, and 42 during Pujarin/69.
Like others suggested, Vijay never worked in Guru Dutt or Atmaram (who made many movies during 70s), its quite likely its same gujarati stage actor, Vijay Dutt. Of course, its not 100%.

Let us forget Vijay Dutt and come back to MUKESH. Mukesh sang a total of 860 songs in 519 Hindi films, 40 songs in 28 regional films, 92 songs in 3 languages —70 in Hindi—Non-filmy and 8 LPs of Ramayan ! This I am quoting from Mukesh Geet Kosh of Harish Raghuvanshi. This list of songs also includes his one line renderings in THANE KAJARIO BANA LOON, YEH CHAND KHILA, TEETAR KE DO AAGE TEETAR. Mukesh is considered master of melancholy, but remember his songs for Raj Kapoor — Awara hoon, Mera joota hai japany, Mera naam Raju, Chhalia mera naam, Ruck ja o janewali, Dum dum diga diga, Sab kuch seekha ham ne, Kisi ki muskurahatoon pe ho fida, Kahta hai joker. Or even for others, like Dilip Kumar, Suhana safar aur ye mausam hasneen, Dil tadap tadap ke. There are many gems sung by him. By the way, I could not listen to this song from Pujarin as the link was stopped. More on Mukesh? Please share with me as I am one of his great fans.

The name of Music Director N.Dutta was so famous that any mention of Narayan Dutta as a composer used to be seen as a mistake or the full name of N.Dutta.Many people thought that there was no such person as Narayan Dutta existing at all.
In reality,however Narayan Dutt was a singer and composer of some repute in his own way.He was the son of the Raj Gayak of Bikaner.Born in Jodhpur in Rajasthan,Narayan took a training in classical music and came to Bombay in 1946.
His first break came in 1947,with MD Hanuman Prasad,and he sang 2 duets with Mukesh and Geeta in Rasili-47.He also sang for Raj Kapoor in Neelkamal-47,Sehra-48, Gauna-49, Uddhar-49 and several C grade stunt films.
He stopped singing and started career as a Composer with Mordhwaj-52.He gave music for Ashiq,Shyam ki Jogan,Naya Qadam,Pujarin,Narad Leela,jai hanuman,Seetaram Radheshyam,Saraswati Laxmi Parvati,sindoor ka daan and humse mile tum-84.He also gave music to 3 Rajasthani films.He made non filmi songs for Arya Samaj,jain religion and Rajneesh Foundation.His training institute “Sur Tarang” trained new singers.
He died suddenly on 16-6-1988.
The film Pujarin was a story of a fight between modern thinking verses the old tradition ridden ills of selfish village Bhagats.It was a fight Ganga gave to expose the black deeds of village Bhagat and to save an innocent person from his clutches.She even sacrifices her love and marries that innocent person,in order to bare open the misdeeds of village Bhagat.
Madan was a Lyricist who specialised in writing for religious and Mythological films.He wrote lyrics in about 15 films.
