Today’s song is the last and final song from a Crime and Social film-Woh Main Nahin-1974.
Produced and directed by Mohan Sehgal for Uma Cine Films P. Ltd. Bombay, it had music by the pair Sonik-Omi, for the songs written by Verma Malik. The cast of the film included Navin Nischal, Rekha, Rakesh Pandey, Padmini Kapila, Iftekhar, Nadira, Jahagirdar, Manhar Desai and a long list of other actors. Special appearances were by Asha Sachdev, Nazneen and Narendranath.
The film was based on the famous and popular Marathi play ” To mi Navhech” (Woh main nahin) written by Acharya P.K.Atre. The play itself was based on the real court case against Madhav Kazi, for cheating and multiple marriages. The story was very interesting and films in many other languages too were made on this story.
Here is a short history of the main story and films made in different languages…..
In yet another case of its kind, the producers of “Naan Avan Illai”, a hit Tamil movie in 2007, filed a lawsuit against Yash Raj Chopra alleging that their recent release “Ladies v. Ricky Bahl” was infringing the copyright belonging to the former. The Tamil Movie in itself is a remake of a 1974 movie by the same name starring superstar – Gemini Ganesan. According to Wikipedia, the 1974 version was a remake of a 1962 Marathi film and play – “To Mee Navhech”. For its part the Marathi play was based on the real life episode involving a conman Madhav Kazi, who was prosecuted and convicted by the Sholapur Sessions Court for masquerading as different men and entrapping lovely ladies to marry him. Interesting bit of trivia here: The counsel for the prosecution was Mr.G.B.Shah, father of former Chief Justice of the Delhi and Madras High Courts, Justice A.P.Shah. Even more interesting, Mr. Sushilkumar Shinde (former Union Power Minister) was the Court peon in the Sholapur Court during the hearing of the case. Kazi’s conviction was upheld by the Bombay HC.
The story of the film was…….
Woh Main Nahin (1974) was a gripping Hindi courtroom mystery thriller directed by Mohan Segal. The film was an official adaptation of the 1962 Marathi play To Mee Navhech (written by Acharya Pralhad Keshav Atre), which itself was inspired by the real-life trial of a notorious conman named Madhav Kazi.
The narrative blends legal drama and suspense, moving between a sensational trial and flashbacks of a serial trickster. The storyline centers around a handsome, humble forest conservator named Vijay (Navin Nischol). Vijay falls in love with Anjali (Rekha), a wealthy heiress. However, just as they are planning their lives together, Vijay is suddenly arrested by the police. He finds himself in the middle of a high-profile criminal trial, facing catastrophic charges including multiple counts of forgery, financial fraud, impersonation, and even murder.
During the trial, the prosecution presents overwhelming evidence against him. One by one, different women from various parts of India take the stand, claiming that he is the man who seduced them, conned them out of their fortunes, married them under false names, and subsequently abandoned them.
The trickster used multiple distinct identities to execute these scams, including: Diwakar Ganesh Datar (a man targeting a marriage bureau), Salimuddin / Sheikh Mansour, Daji Shastri and Baba Radheshyam etc etc.
Despite the victims identifying him directly in court, Vijay steadfastly maintains his absolute innocence. Every time an accusation is hurled at him, he firmly replies with the phrase that gives the film its title: “Woh main nahin” (“I am not him”).With his life on the line, Vijay must rely on his legal team and his fiercely loyal partner, Anjali, to crack the case. Together, they work to unearth the truth, eventually exposing a dangerous, deep-rooted conspiracy involving a look-alike rogue named Ranjeet (Rakesh Pandey). The film culminates in a classic 1970s Bollywood suspense reveal, uncovering how the real criminal managed to evade the law for over a decade by shifting faces across India, and how Vijay was framed for the mastermind’s crimes.
‘Woh Main Nahin’ was directed by Mohan Sehgal (or Mohan Segal) for Uma Cine Films Pvt. Ltd., Bombay. Mohan Sehgal was also the producer of this movie. Praveen Nischol was the Chief Asstt Director of this movie. ( brother of Navin Nischol). Ali Raza was the writer of this movie.
One of the artists in the film cast was Manhar Desai. I was shocked to find his name in the cast, because he was popular for Mythological films from 1950 to 1970.
Manhar Desai was a Gujarati Christian-real name Malcolm Alfredo D’souza. He was born on 3-8-1917. He used to stammer when he was a boy. He used to act and sing in dramas and due to his stammering style, he was very popular on stage. After completing High school, he ran away to Bombay to join Films, but could not even enter any studio, Disappointed, he returned to his home and restarted studies. He became normal with treatment. He joined Wilson college in Bombay for graduation. In college he started acting and singing on stage. He had a friend N.C.Pandey, who was also mad after films. He promised Manhar that if he becomes a Director, he will make Manhar a Hero. While in college Manhar married his classmate, who was from U.P.
In 1947, Manhar got a call from his friend N.C.Pandey, who was to direct a Hindi film. He made Manhar the Hero of this film and thus fulfilled his promise. Toofani Sawar-47 was the first film of Manhar Desai, in Hindi. He was invited to work in the film Gunsundari-48 ( Gujarati), opposite Nirupa Roy. The film was Hit and he acted in the next film Mangal Phera-49 with Nirupa Roy. This too became a Hit film in Gujarati and then there was no looking back. His next Hindi film was Madhosh-51 opposite Meena kumari. Following their success in Gujarati, Nirupa Roy and Manhar were paired in several Mythological films in Hindi. Films Naag Panchami-53 and Shivratri-54 made him a popular Hero in Hindi mythological films.
It is a coincidence that the Two film stars known for Mythological films, namely Shahu Modak and Manhar Desai, both were Non Hindus and were Christians.
Manhar Desai was fond of Reading. During breaks in shooting, he would catch up with his reading. He also was a good painter. Manhar worked in 106 Hindi films. His last film was Nal Damyanti-88. In the last phase of his career, he was disillusioned about working in films in this era, so he gave up working and retired. Manhar Desai died on 25-2-1992.
