Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ek din sapne mein dekha sapna

Posted on: April 26, 2012

This article is written by Peevesie, a contributor of lyrics and now a writeup contributor to this blog.

It is another of my absolute favorite songs and movies. I actually have a superstition that if I see a Hrishikesh Mukherjee Movie on the morning of an exam or an important day, the day will go well. Golmaal(1979) is a movie that came regularly in the morning 6 am slot in SAB Tv and SET MAX while I was in school and thus went on to be a much by-hearted film. In fact I remember when my cousins were 2 yrs old and I called my aunt one day, she told me that they were watching this movie. I replied that I am extremely proud of her, she is giving them the right education and they will grow up to be like me. She laughingly said that then I will shut the movie right away.

There are two songs from this movie up already, “Aanewala pal” and “Golmaal hai bhai” which was put by Atul in honour of his pets.

This song is picturised on Amol Palekar who plays “Ram Prasad Sharma” and his friends, viz. Chandramohan Khanna, Anand Ahuja, Amol Sen, and the last one I am not sure if it is Siddharth or Joshi. Anand Ahuja is Govinda’s uncle. In fact everyone in Ahuja Family seem to be in acting considering there there are so many of them in the industry. Siddharth has been credited as the co-producer of Beti No. 1(2000). Chandramohan Khanna is also seen in Chupke Chupke(1975) as the guy Keshto Mukherjee catches by the hair and screams “Pakda! Pakda!” in the “Ek saala driver Malik ki saali ko leke bhaag gaya!” scene. The song has Manju Singh too who plays Ratna, sister of Ram Prasad Sharma in the movie. My mom tells me that she was one of the first persons to come from tv to movies. She used to do “Khel Khilone”, and apparently my mom and her friends, as kids, used to refer to her as Manju didi.

The song also has Zeenat Aman, Rekha, Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan, and a screenshot of Lata Mangeshkar. Amitabh Bachchan is seen in a very Guddi – like scene, except that its Amol Palekar who is giving the autograph as “Love, from Anthony bhai Gonslaves”. Zeenat Aman is seen in a costume resembling her look from the song “Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal” from “Satyam Shivam Sundaram(1978) while Rekha seems to have walked straight out of Khoobsurat’s(1980) sets to shoot for this song. In fact even the house from where she is seen pleading to Amol Palekar dressed as a jogi is the house from Khoobsurat.

This just goes to reiterate what Amitabh Bachchan had told in an interview about Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Apparently, Hrishikesh Mukherjee did not waste much time on set decoration, costumes, etc. He would take the carpet from one set’s dining room and put it in the hall of the next and start shooting. If some actor came and asked what he or she should wear for a particular scene he would say, “ye.. jo tumne pehna hai na, wahi hi theek hai”.

It goes without saying the music of this song is composed by R. D. Burman, and the lyrics are by Gulzar. The singer for the song is Kishore kumar with R. D. Burman and Sapan Chakrovarthy giving “saath” as they say in Vividh Bharati.

Song-Ek din sapne mein dekha sapna (Golmaal)(1979) Singer-Kishore Kumar, R D Burman, Sapan Chakravarty, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman

Ek din sapne mein dekha sapna
arre wo jo hai na Amitabh apna
(Bachchan ?)
market se out hua
logon ko doubt hua
meri wajah se woh gaya
kismat toh badli
kya kahoon really
main Amitabh ho gaya
sapne mein dekha sapna

daayein mein Hema
bayein mein Zeenat
saamne Rekha peeche jo dekha
daayein mein Hema
baayein mein Zeenat
saamne Rekha peeche jo dekha
(to kya hua?)
Ratna khadi thhi
haath mein chhadi thhi
dekhte dekhte main bhaag raha thha
dekha main jaag raha thha
sapne mein dekha sapna

haan ek aur yaad aaya,
ek din chhoti si dekhi ek sapni
(sapni ?)
woh jo hai na
Lata apni
Lata gaa rahi thhi
Main table pe thha
woh mukhde pe thhi
main antre pe thha
taal kahaan tam kahaan
tum kahaan hum kahan
taal kahaan tam kahaan
tum kahaan hum kahaan
taa thai tai tha
taa thai tai tha
ghm ghm ghm ghm ghm
taa thai tai tha
taa thai tai tha
ghm ghm ghm ghm ghm
Taiya taiya thai
takata jum takata num takita na!
sapne mein dekha sapna
sapne mein dekha sapna aa

I think Hema maliniji shot was taken from Prem Sagar`s Jeetendra,Hemamalini, sri ram lagoo starrer 1979 “HUM TERE ASHIQ HAIN

and Amol Palekar`s sister is MANJU SINGH

The main guy(withe moustache) who sings the songs and dances(as one of Amol palekar`s friend)is ANAND

Anand has been spotted in a couple of Hrishikesh’s films. What happened to him? Did he ever get a good long character to play?

I have seen him in Another Hrishikesh Mukherjee laugh riot NARAM GARAM as Swaroop sampat`s brother. That`s all I think, I haven`t seen him then onwards.

Chandramohan Khanna was also known for his role in tv serial, Paying Guest.

Can any knowlegeable person tell if Sapan Chakravarty & today’s MD Pritam chakravarthy are related?
K S Shenoy

No, Pritam is the son of Prabodh Chakraborty, a principal of a music school in Kolkata

What a lovely write-up! And for a lovely song too.
Thank you so much, Peevesie. I’m seeing this song after SO many years. I’d almost forgotten about it. Thanks for reviving its memory for me.

Thanks Raja
YOu can see it quite regularly when the movie comes on tv. it comes atleast once a month

Sapan Chakraborty and R D Burman are singers for “golmaal hai bhai sab golmaal hai”.

This song, i believe has only 2 singers – Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar.

correction required Atul ji
This song was sung by Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar
The other song “Golmal hai sab golmaal hai” was sung by SAPAN CHAKRAVARTHY & R.D.Burman

Thank you Prakash ji for the links 🙂
