Recently I wrote up a 1970s song here and today I’m presenting another 1970s song.

I know that by the standards of this blog, the 1970s is a fairly recent decade. Most of the songs here are from an earlier period – and I love this because it gives me an opportunity to listen to, and learn about, so many forgotten gems of an earlier era. I will never forget the thrill I got when I heard “halla gulla lai la (Dholak – 1951)” for the first time – it has since become one of my FAVOURITE songs! Actually I’d always been interested in old songs but thanks to the internet and this blog, my interest has not only been encouraged, it has also been sharpened in the last few years.

I had neither heard this song nor the name of the movie this song is from. Name of the movie is “Road No 303” (1960). YT, whose information is always required to be taken with a pinch of salt, mentions the year as 1963. This B grade movie was a Mahesh Pictures production and it was directed by Dharmesh Kumar. The movie had Mehmood, Shubha Khote,Bhagwan, Helen, Tiwari, K. N. Singh, etc in it. I found that the year of release of this song is variously shown as 1959, 1960 and 1963.

I am writing again today to document another very important interaction; an interaction that has been a dream for me for many months now. I am in San Diego today, and the local time is 2.00 am. And I am writing this post from the residence of Shri Surjit Singh ji. I am sure friends on this blog would be familiar with his name, in context of Hindi films and film music. He is a diehard fan of this music, and has been playing a major role in raising awareness about it, collecting rare materials and making them available on the internet. His web site is at here , and I recommend friends and readers on this blog to visit this and find out more about him.

One of the advantages of living through a period (as opposed to reading or hearing about it second-hand) is that you have your own experiences of it that nothing else can quite substitute for. Of course, events may be recorded very accurately for posterity so that future generations get an idea of the past. But it is still not the same thing.

The moment we see the caption for this song “woh din yaad karo, woh din yaad karo ” the mind somehow produced the image of Mehmood and Shobha Khote singing this. I dont know how it happened to me, because I dont remember seeing this song before. I havent seen this movie either. This song was frequently played on vividh bharati. May be my mother had told me that this was a Mehmood -Shobha Khote song, and the information was stored somewhere in the deep recesses. Similar thing happened the other day with ‘Ajahun na aaye baalma saawan beeta jaaye”. This song from ‘Saanjh aur Savera’ has roughly the same team of Mehmood-Shobha, with only S. Kalyanpur replacing Lata. It is a classical, sort of jugalbandi song. When I saw the video I knew I had seen it on T.V. in “Chhaayageet ” or “Chitrahaar”.

“Parinay” (1974) was an Art film. In other words it was a low budget film whose makers were so broke that they could not hire big names. So they made do with out of job artists. The actors of this movie were all newcomers, viz Shabana Azmi, Romesh Sharma, Asha Sachdev, Dinesh Thakur Preeti Ganguly, T.P.Jain etc. I remember watching a still of Shabana Azmi from this movie. It was obvious that the movie makers were too broke to even afford makeup men. Shabana Azmi looked ugly and I wondered how a lady with that looks can ever be chosen to work in Hindi movies, and that too as the leading lady.
