It is with great pleasure that I write this tribute today to Johnny Walker, one of the greatest (if not the greatest) comedy actors we have seen in Hindi cinema. Today happens to be his 89th birth anniversary and it is as good an occasion as any to remember him and thank him for all the wonderful memories he has left us with.

“Aalingan”(1974) , though a recent movie by the standards of this movie is an extremely obsure movie. This movie was a low budget movie, which were then euphemistically described as art movie and they used to be made with out of work newcomers.

It still surprises some of my friends when I tell them that I completed my high school studies in Hindi medium. It was unthinkable that a person belonging to one of the southern states would join the Hindi medium school. It was a surprise for me as well.

‘Yaasmeen’, a film from 1955 is well known for some wonderful gems coming from the pen of Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and the music composition by C Ramchandra. The film has ten songs out of which four are already represented on this blog, including the evergreen iconic rendering of “Bechain Nazar Betaab Jigar” by Talat Mehmood, and “Mujh Pe Ilzaam e Bewafaai Hai” by Lata Mangeshkar. Here is the fifth offering from this film – another iconic song that would qualify for the tag ‘how come this song was not posted earlier’.

“Bluff Master” (1963) was produced by Subhash Desai and directed by Manmohan Desai. This movie had Shammi Kapoor, Saira Bano, Saira Banu, Pran, Rashid Khan, Mohan Choti, Niranjan Sharma, Jugal Kishore, Shyamlal, Anand Joshi, Santosh Kumar, Lalita Pawar, Tuntun, Charlie Walker etc in it.

“Baaghi Shehzaada” (1964) was a Gee Pee films production. It was directed by Maruti, The movie had Kishore Kumar and Kumkum in lead roles, alongwith W. M. Khan, Anwar, Maruti, B. M. Vyas etc.

In olden days, Hindi movie watchers often loved to watch movies telling sad and tragic tales. Personally I never liked watching such movies. I have never watched “Boot Polish” (1953) for this reason.

“Ek Phool Chaar Kaante” (1960) was a Prabhat Films Production. It was directed by Bhappi Sonie. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Helen, Dhumal, Kanhaiyalal, Johnny Walker, David Abraham etc in it.

Kaun rang mungwa kawan rang motiyaa

Munshi Premchand (31 July 1880- 8 october 1936) was a premier Hindi novelist whose novels and stories have had an enormous influence on modern Hindi literature. When I look at his literary output, I am amazed at his vision. His vision was unbelievably progressive and futuristic, especially considering the era he lived in (late 19th century to early 20th century).
