Chal chale ae dil

Posted on: June 27, 2012

When I was growing up in 1970s, I had heard of Gulshan Nanda a lot. Gulshan Nanda was the most popular Hindi novelist of that time. How popular he was could be judged from the fact that several of his novels were made into popular Hindi movies with same titles. For instance, “Kati Patang” (1970) was made based on his novel of the same name.

“Jheel Ke Us Paar” was a Gulshan Nanda novel that I heard a lot about those days. The fact that a movie was made on this novel too shows how popular this novel was during that time.

This movie was produced and directed by Bhappie Soni. The movie had Dharmendra, Mumtaz,Veena, Yogita Bali, Prem chopra, Shatrughna Sinha, Pran, Anwar Hussain, Junior Mehmood, Ifthekar, Faryal, Ranjeet, Sujata, Urmila Bhatt, Polson, Uma Dutt, Ravikant, Abhimanyu Sharma, Narbada Shankar, Madan Kenny, K.K.Grover, Baby Chikkoo, Jagdish Raj etc in it.

Here is the title song from this movie. This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Mumtaz and Dharmendra.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

On the occasion of R D Burman’s birth anniversary (27 july) here is this magical haunting melody from “Jheel Ke Us Paar” (1973).

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Chal chale ae dil (Jheel Ke Us Paar)(1973) Singer-Lata, lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

hooo…ooooo……
ooo…ooooo…oooooooooooooo
ooooooooo …..ooooooooooo
chal chale ai dil
karein chal
kar kissi kaa intezaar
intezaar jheel ke uss paar
chal chale ai dil
karein chal
kar kissi kaa intezaar
intezaar jheel ke uss paar

shaayad koi pardesi
aa jaaye soone des mein
mil jaaye bhagwaan mujhko
aadmi ke bhes mein………….
shaayad koi pardesi
aa jaaye soone des mein
mil jaaye bhagwaan mujhko
aadmi ke bhes mein
kyaa ho jaaye kya hai aitbaar
jheel ke uss paar
chal chale ai dil
karein chal
kar kissikaa intezaar
intezaar jheel ke uss paar

jo iss paar nahin
koi kya jaane woh uss paar ho
parbat ke peechhe ek
sundar sapnon ka sansaar ho
o…oo….ooo…ooooo
jo iss paar nahin koi
kya jaane woh uss paar ho
parbat ke peechhe ek
sundar sapnon ka sansaar ho
aayee ho bahaaron pe bahaar
jheel ke uss paar
chal chale ai dil
karein chal
kar kissikaa intezaar
intezaar jheel ke uss paar
chal chale ai dil
karein chal
kar kissikaa intezaar
intezaar jheel ke uss paar
chalein………eeeeeeee……eeeee

Patthar Ke Sanam is also based on a story from Gulshan Nanda. However, I’m not sure if its based on one of his novels. The above lists consist movie titles that matches with Novels written by Gulshan Nanda of the same names. First list obviously its him, cause he has also written the movie screenplays.

Saanjh ki bela was a novel by GN. i was an avid reader of Gulshan Nanda novels then. I have read most of the titles you say were based on his novels, the certain ones

Yes. All above mentioned are his novels. There is a delayed movie Sanjh Ki Bela (1981) with Joy Mukherjee, and I’m not sure if it is based on GN’s novel.

He has a novel Kali Ghata, but it seems like movie Kali Ghata (Rekha) has nothing to do with his novel. He also has a novel Mehbooba, but it seems movie Mehbooba (Rajesh Khanna) is actually based on other novel of GN, Sisakte Saaz.

Kaajal (Meena Kumari) is based on his novel Madhavi. And so is Phoolon Ki Sej (novel Andhere Chirag).

He has written many other movies like Vaasna, Khilona, Nazrana, etc, but it seems they are not based on his novels.
