Today (12 september) is Jaikishan’s birth anniversary. One half of the famous Shankar Jaikishan duo, Jaikishan had died quite young at an age of 41 on this day in 1971. He achieved so much at such a young age . The Shankar Jaikishan duo were easily the most dominant and prolific music directors of the golden era of Hindi movie music.

“Aurat” (1953) was a Verma Production movie. It was produced by Munshi Ram Verma and directed by Bhagwan Das Verma. The movie had Premnath, Bina Rai, Purnima, Ullhas, Hiralal, Roopmala, Nazirabai, Mirabai, Devkishan, Mirza, S. Pratap, Shanta Patel, Nazir Kashmiri, Rajkishore etc in it.

“Achhoot Kanya” (1936) was made at an era far far removed from the present day. It was produced by Bombay Talkies. Its producer was Himanshu Rai and it was directed by a German director called Franz Osten. It was a case of an indophile German directing a Hindi movie on a sensitive topic like untouchability and doing a great job. And those were the days when India was under British occupation too. And Ashok Kumar, a lab assistant with Bombay Talkies found himself being made the hero of the movie when the heroine Devika Rani eloped with the original hero, only to come back subsequently. And she was the wife of Himanshu Rai ! And the music director of this movie, a Parsi lady faced stiff resistance from members of her community who were against her decision of joining the film line as a music director.

“Raag Rang” (1952) was produced under the banner of Bali Sisters (Geeta Bali and Sudha Bali). The movie was directed by Digvijay and the movie had Ashok Kumar, Geeta Bali, Agha, Madan Puri, Sunder, Ruma Guha Thakurta etc in it. Three songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
