Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Udi hawaa mein jaati hai

Posted on: September 11, 2012

“Achhoot Kanya” (1936) was made at an era far far removed from the present day. It was produced by Bombay Talkies. Its producer was Himanshu Rai and it was directed by a German director called Franz Osten. It was a case of an indophile German directing a Hindi movie on a sensitive topic like untouchability and doing a great job. And those were the days when India was under British occupation too. And Ashok Kumar, a lab assistant with Bombay Talkies found himself being made the hero of the movie when the heroine Devika Rani eloped with the original hero, only to come back subsequently. And she was the wife of Himanshu Rai ! And the music director of this movie, a Parsi lady faced stiff resistance from members of her community who were against her decision of joining the film line as a music director.

Indeed the behind the scene tales during the making of this movie were no less interesting that the story of this movie itself.

As many as seven songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the eighth song from the movie. This song is sung by Devika Rani and it is picturisd on her as well. It is a “missing the beloved”genre of song. J S Kashyap is the lyricist and music is composed by Saraswati Devi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Udi hawaa mein jaati hai gaati chidiyaa ye raag (Achhoot Kanya)(1936) Singer-Devika Rani, Lyrics-J S Kashyap, MD-Saraswat Devi

Lyrics (Provided by Nitin Shah)

udi hawaa mein jaati hai
gaati chidiyaa ye raag
aavo preetam hilmil khelen
prem preet ka phaag
udi hawaa mein jaati hai
gaati chidiyaa ye raag
aavo preetam hilmil khelen
prem preet ka phaag

chidiyaa sang sang udati phirti
saagar mein milti nadiya
chidiyaa sang sang udti phirti
saagar mein milti nadiya

main dukhiyaari bichhad gayi
kaa ke sang kheloonu phaag
main dukhiyaari bichhad gayi
kaa ke sang kheloon phaag
udi hawaa mein jaati hai
gaati chidiyaa ye raag
aavo preetam hilmil khelen
prem preet ka phaag

Atul ji,
Now only one last and Final song remains to be posted-‘Hari base sakal sansara….'(Male) singer not known.

Thanks for this information.

Hope Raja likes this one

Raja likes the entire movie. He has sub titled this movie for the convenience of non Hindi speaking fans of Hindi movies.

Oh, yes I do. 🙂 I love EVERYTHING about this movie, from first scene to last. It is one of my favourite movies. I did subtitle the entire movie for a non-Hindi speaking audience a few months ago.

It is a very realistic movie – the scenes of warmth between the upper-caste Ashok Kumar/his father and the lower-caste Devika Rani/her father are particularly touching.

It is sad that this movie is still VERY RELEVANT in India, 76 years after this movie was made. We still have the caste issues highlighted by this film.

Bimal Roy’s Sujata is the other fantastic film about caste discrimination that comes readily to mind. I don’t see new Hindi movies that much, maybe there have been recent ones too.
