Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Sambhaalo sambhaalo apna dil dilwaalon

Posted on: December 3, 2012

This blog has more than one hundred “Helen” songs. In these songs, Helen would typically perform a cabarat dance and the hero would be seated on a table in the bar where this dance is being performed. I recently begin to wonder whether one can count the number of heroes who figure in such picturisations. I can recall many names right from Ashok Kumar (Howrah Bridge-1958) to Amitabh Bachchan (several movies). Then I reminded myself that Helen had started her cabarat dancing career in 1950s when the three big heroes were Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dec Anand.

Somehow I cannot visualise Dilip Kuamr (typically playing a Salim) going to a bar and being treated to a Helen cabarat. And Raj Kapoor, typically playing a have not, was rather more likely to be seen in the company of folk dancers rather than cabarat dancers.

when it comes to Dev saab, one can easily visualise him going to a bar with Helen performinb there. Indeed there are several such songs.

Here is a “helen” song from “Kaala Baazaar” (1960). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Helen, and Dev saab is present on the occasion of course,

Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

This song happens to be the eighth and final song from this movie.

So here is this song that sees “Kaala Baazaar” (1960) join the rank of movies with all their songs discussed in the blog.

apna dil dilwaalon

khudd nazar takraati gayi

apna dil dilwaalon

khud se wo begaana hua
jo bhi mera deewaana hua
khud se wo begaana hua
jo hona hai so ho rahega
sochta hai kya

Rashid Khan can be seen quite often and prominently. He was a permanent fixture in Dev’s film. Like Rajesh Khanna had his secretary; Amitabh had his whats-his-name (Prakashchandra please help) Om Prakash had his some Bakshi(man Friday). Prakshchandra can come up with the list

You are right ,
its Ram.P.Sethi/R.P.Sethi,who acted also directed Prakash Mehra movie Ghunghroo(starring Late Smita Patil, Shashi Kapoor,Waheeda Rehman,Padmini Kapila,Kunal Goswami,Komal)
I remember him from his Hanste Zakham Days where he featured in Asha Bhosle dance song “Gali gali me kiyaa re badnaam, mere bairi ne” with dancer “Chaand”

Ram Sethi is superb in Basu Chatterjee/Prakash mehra venture Chameli ki shaadi

And with Rajesh Khanna It must be his scretary(I am not very sure about this fact)Gurnam Singh/Gurnam

And I don`t know name of Om prakash`s man friday.

With Dev Anand I remember another name-:Ratan Gaurang(One Nepali looking man who is very short, and was there in many Dev Anand movies)

Regading Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor being seen in the company of Helen.

Raj Kapoor and Helen share the dance floor in film ‘Anari’ (1959) for the new year celebration song “Nineteen Fifty Six. . . “, available at https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2009/06/09/nineteen-fiftysix-nineteen-fiftyseven/.

Then Dilip Kumar appears with Helen, in the song “Peete Peete Kabhi Kabhi Yoon Jaam. . .” from film ‘Bairaag’ (1976). They are not exactly singing. The song is being sung by Dilip Kumar and Leena Chandavarkar at a party. In the double role, the other Dilip Kumar appears with Helen, supposedly in a different room, while this song is in progress. The situation between the two is short, but very intimate. (Song available at https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/peete-peete-kabhi-kabhi-yoon-jaam-badal-jaate-hain/).
