Hindi films and Hindi Music always played a bigger role than just entertaining people. It helped to keep a common thread between Indian people and lovers of Hindi films and music all over the world. Those music lovers who left India and settled in different countries all over the Globe and those music lovers of undivided India, separated now in various countries accross the borders have always cherished the melody of sweet songs of Yore !

If you take a look at the various Blogs on the Internet related to Hindi Films and Music, you will find several Blogs run by NRIs or Foreigners-who can not speak Hindi but love the language of music.

It is a natural tendency that when you are settled away from your home country, you become very sensitive and possessive about everything connected with your home country.Perhaps that is how several overseas groups celebrate Indian Festival with more enthusiasm that the Indians themselves. In every such festivity there is a Music programme included always.

When our Musicians, Actors and Singers go abroad, they get maximum requests for old songs from the audience there.

Hindi film industry has always been a Casteless, Religionless Secular(in its True spirit) industry where what matters is what you can contribute rather than who you are.

I quote here an extract from a book by a famous Historian of World music,James McConnachie-

” As India marched towards an uncertain future post partition 1947 period, film songs offered something Unique. They helped creating a sense of belonging to One Nation.Something that the divisive extreme right or left wingers chanting religious slogans, could never achieve. When Hindi film singers sang no one cared whether Mohd.rafi is a Muslim or Lata is a Hindu Bramhin. Its great Music bridged the gap between Hindus and Muslims much better than any Politician (even Gandhi or Nehru)ever could ! ‘ (World Music-the rough Guide,Vol 2,page 106,Harper Collins-1990)

That is why there was no wonder that the Best ever Hindi film Bhajan “Man tadpat hari darshan ko aaj” was sung by Mohd.Rafi, written by Shakeel Badayuni and composed by Naushad Ali. Similarly,”Aye malik tere Bande hum” sung by Lata, written by Pt. Bharat Vyas and composed by Vasant Desai became the Prayer song in Pakistani schools. (Prof.Subhash Savarkar-Ruperi Smaran Yatra).

While Film Music crossed several barriers, the films themselves proved to be a mix of experts from every corner of India. Hindi films have actors, Directors and composers from almost every state. In this, however,Bengal has taken a lead in providing the raw material. Several wellknown actors came from Bengal. Many Directors like,Bimal Roy ,Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Nabendu Ghosh, Basu Chaterjee, Basu Bhattacharya, Shakti Samanta, Amiya Chakravarty, Gyan Mukherjee etc enriched the Hindi cinema.

Music directors who came from Bengal like, Hemant kumar, Salil Chaudhari, S D Burman, Anil Biswas, K C Dey, Pankaj Mullik etc provided us wonderful everlasting music.

Most of the directors and composers from Bengal are well known to most of us,but there was ONE name that appeared in many categories like Actor, Director, Story writer, Screen Play writer, Lyricist, and Composer too, yet that name is as obscure today as it can be !

That name is HIREN BOSE ( Hirendra Kumar Bose).

Born in Calcutta on 26-9-1903, Hiren completed his college education and learnt classical music and Rabindra sangeet to such proficiency that soon he earned titles of “Vidya Bhushan” and “Sangeet Ratna “. He wrote in Begali papers and for Bangla films too.

He knew that if he has to shine in Films, he must go to Bombay and operate in both in Bombay and Calcutta. He saw Anil Biswas struggling hard in those days and advised him to come to Bombay. Hiren Bose was a very respected man in Film world. Accordingly Anil Biswas came to Bombay and Hiren gave him his first film for Music Direction-Dharam ki Devi-1935, for which Hiren Bose was the Director.

Hiren Bose started acting and directing Bangla filma from 1931 and did 20 films till 1957.

In 1932 he wrote the story and screen play for Meerabai-32 and again for Rajrani Meera-33. His Hindi films were Dharam ki Devi, Piya ki Jogan, Mahageet, India in Africa, Daasi, Banjare,Ghungroo, Raami Dhoban and Raj Ratan.

He even directed a Telugu film-Bhakta Jaidev-1938.

Mahageet-37 was the First Hindi film to have Playback singing from Bombay( after Calcutta in 1935).

Hiren Bose gave music to only 2 films- India in Africa-39 for which no records were issued and then Raami Dhoban-1953.

His last film was Ek Tara(Bangla)-1957. Then he retired.

Hiren Bose died on 18-6-1987 at Calcutta and a most versatile, multifaceted and multilingual personality disappeared for ever.

Raami Dhoban -53 had 14 songs in it. Lyrics were written by Ram Murthy and the cast included Abhi Bhattacharya, Kamini Kaushal, Tiwari, Sankata Prasad, Uma Devi etc.

Today we will hear a song from this film sung by Hemant Kumar and Geeta Dutt in the Keertan style of Bengal.

Song-Sun sun sun sun maanush bhai (Raami Dhoban)(1953) Singers-Hemant Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Ram Murty, MD-Hiren Bose
Hemant Kumar + Geeta Dutt
Chorus

Lyrics

sun sun sun sun maanush bhaai
sun sun sun sun maanush bhaai
sabse upar tu hi satya hai
tujhme shakti samaai ee ee
sabse upar tu hi satya hai
tujhmein shakti samaai
sun sun sun sun manush bhai

tujhme baste hain naaraayan
tu basta hai naarayan mein
naaraayan mein
bol baawre dhoondh raha tu
phir kyun dharti aur gagan mein

hari ??
narayan wo naam bada sukhdaayi
sun sun sun manush bhai

sabme ek lahu ki dhaara
sabme ek saans lehraati
unch neech ki jwaala hai
nar naarayan ko chali jalaati
chali jalaati
bhed bhaw ki kali badli
manawta pe chaayi
sun sun sun sun manush bhai

jisne tan man ke tukdon se
rachi teri ye sundar kaaya
aa aa
aa aa

jisne tan man ke tukdon se
rachi teri ye sundar kaaya
apne aap bana pathhar ka
dekar apni mamta maaya
dekar apni mamta maaya
sabko kiya kamaal jagat mein
dekar ke parbhu taali
sun sun sun sun maanush bhaai
sabke upar tu hi bhakt hai
tujhme shakti samaai

sabke upar tu hi satya hai
tujhme shakti samaai

(sun sun sun sun manush bhai)
sabke upar tu hi satya hai
tujhme shakti samaai

(sun sun sun sun manush bhai)
sabke upar tu hi satya hai
tujhme shakti samaai

(sun sun sun sun manush bhai)
sabke upar tu hi satya hai
tujhme shakti samaai

(sun sun sun sun manush bhai)

Arun ji,

A very informative write up and a very wonderful bhajan; I am hearing it for the first time today.

Your posts bring to life personalities that we have simply heard of. I am aware of Hiren Bose, but just another name in the industry. Your post brings out a more complete picture of the person. Thanks so much for such detailed information.

In line with (??), I think the words should be
“hari satya sukh”.
