July 17th is the birth anniversary of Snehal Bhatkar ( 17/07/1919 – 29/05/2007), one of the forgotten music directors of the Hindi film industry. On his last death anniversary, I had written an article on him for this blog. So I would skip his profile. Snehal Bhatkar was a talented music director who, like many lesser known music directors, lost in the rigmarole of the Hindi film industry.

July 17th is the death anniversary of Kanan Devi (22/04/1916-17/07/1992). I had written an article for this blog on her last birth anniversary. So I will not go into her profile. She was one of the most beautiful and graceful actors of her time. She brought respectability to female actors. It is said that she was the highest paid film actors of her time and in one film, ‘Chandrashekhar'(1948), she was paid one rupee more than the remuneration paid to her lead actor Ashok Kumar. Sahir Ludhianvi, probably took a hint from her when he started demanding one rupee more than that paid to the music directors.

Yesterday, Atul ji has posted a song whose lyrics were sent in by Prakash ji. The song –“Kaise Mitti Ke Maadho Se Paala Padaa” . On screen, it is Leena Chandavarkar trying to woo an apparently unwilling Sanjeev Kumar who seemingly does not understand the moves she is making and the words she is singing. Or maybe he does, but is choosing to remain aloof and unconcerned. I remember this song from the radio listening days, but I saw the video only today. And as soon as the song started, and Leena Chandavarkar started to sing out her complaints to her ‘beau fatale’, I immediately recalled another song – same era, same pair of actors on screen, the same complaint. Well one difference, the mood in the song that I refer to, is a bit more explicit, and a bit more demanding.

Now how come this song has not yet made it to the blog? Well I think the main reason could be that there are so many such wonderful gems still out there that I am sure we are going to continue rediscovering them and posting them here, for a long time still to come. And yet, on listening to this particular song, memories of the radio listening days are revived and the mind says, where has this song be sitting for all these years.

Tumhi ne mujhko prem sikhaaya
Posted on: July 17, 2012
When I was going through the list of all songs sung by Mukesh, I found that Mukesh had sung a song called “tumhi ne mujhko prem sikhaaya” in his debut movie called “Nirdosh” (1941). While searching for this song, I was unable to find that song. But on the other hand I located another, and even older song with similar lyrics.
