“Bhaagam Bhaag” (1956) was a light hearted comedy movie. It was produced and directed by Bhagwan. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Bhagwan, Smriti Biswas, Badri Prasad, Shashikala, Kumkum, Tiwari etc in it. In this movie, everyone played characters who were named the same as their actual names. For instance, Kishore Kumar played a character named Kishore and Bhagwan played a character named Bhagwan.

“Do Raaste”(1970) is a well known movie because this movie had Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz in it, with the stars of both of them being on the rise. This movie was produced and directed by Raj Khosla. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz, Balraj Sahni, Jayant, Veena, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Asit Sen, Randhir, Leela Misra, Bindu, Mehmood Junior, Kamini Kaushal, Prem Chopra etc in it.

The movie had Guru Dutt, Asha Parekh, Mehmood, Sudesh Kumar, Kanhaiyalal, Nana Palsikar, Shivraj, Om Prakash, Neena, Sulochana Chatterjee, Lalita Pawar, Shubha Khote, Sai, Subbalaxmi etc in it.

Among the ‘forgotten’ music directors of the golden era, Snehal Bhatkar is remembered for his immortal song kabhi tanhaayion mein yoon hamaari yaad aayegi. In my case, I remember him for an additional reason. Somehow I felt that he had an unique personality. I am not a face reader 🙂 but when I saw Snehal Bhatkar for the first time on TV some time in 90s (on one of the Marathi channels) he appeared to be to be a self contented man. He was in the TV programme to witness the renditions of some of his popular filmy and non-filmy songs by some young and budding singers. Sitting in the front row with his trade mark white Gandhi cap, he was enjoying the rendition of his songs without any nostalgic reactions on his face. Whenever I see his photographs – old as well as new ones, I get the same impression of a contented man.

Today (28th may), which happens to be the birthday of music director Vinod gives me a good reason to discuss a few songs composed by him. Vinod, whose real name was Eric Robert was born on 28th may 1922 at Lahore. He came to Bombay in late 1940s alongwith Roop K Shorey. Vinod composed music in about 32 Hindi movies and a few Punjabi movies. He was one of the pioneers of Hindi movie music during its formative years. He was one of those who used western music as well as Hinglish lyrics in his compositions at a time when such compositions were not quite in vogue.

“Mukhda” (1951) is an obscure movie by now. It was a Shorey Pictures presentation. It was produced and directed by Roop K Shorey. The movie had Satish, Kuldip Kaur, Majnu, Neeta, Siddiqui, Kukku etc in it. I am surprised to note that the name of Meena Shorey, the wife of Roop K Shorey does not figure in the list of actors. The list of actors in the starcast could well be only partial.
