Connoisseurs of Urdu poetry may recall that sometime in early 90s, Doordarshan televised a TV serial KAHAKASHAN covering the lives of six of the doyens of Urdu poetry – Firaq Gorakhpuri, Hasrat Mohani, Jigar Moradabadi, Josh Malihabadi, Majaz Lacknawi and Makhdoom Mohiuddin. This TV serial was produced by another well known Urdu poet and writer, Ali Sardar Jafri, the contemporary of these galaxy of poets. The serial was directed by Jalal Agha. I had seen some of the episodes of this serial in the 90s but did not remembered much of the contents. A few months back, I came across the episodes of this TV serial on the internet. I have already watched the episodes covering Firaq Gorakhpuri and Majaz Lucknawi. The treatment in the serial is biographical in nature covering some of the important events in the lives of these poets interspersed with their own ghazals many of which were sung Jagjit Singh who also composed the music for the TV serial. Watching the episodes covering these two Urdu poets, to say the least, was a heart wrenching experience for me as the lives of these two poets were full of pains, misery, misfortunes and loneliness. My curiosity to learn more about these six Urdu poets grew after I had watched this T V serial.

Today (4 january 2013) is the birth anniversary of Nirupa Roy (4 January 1931 – 13 October 2004). To most moviewatchers, she was the eternally suffering Maa of Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor in several movies of 1970s, but that was only part of her impressive cv. She had made her debut an a movie actress in late 1940s and she acted as a leading lady in many movies throughout 1950s and early part of 1960s before easing into the roles of Bhabhi and later maa from late 1960s onwards. I find it curious to realise now that she at the age of 44, played the mother of Amitabh Bachchan (then aged 34) and Shashi Kapoor (then aged 38) in 1975 in Deewaar.

Hindi film music became people oriented, in the real sense, from Khazanchi-1941. Till then HFM was ,as if, in the clutches of Classical and stage music.
The begining of the Fifth decade of the 20th century was a revolutionary period for Film Industry. Mehboob, Kardar, K.Asif, V.Shantaram, Filmistan etc established their own studios and started producing meaningful cinemas. It also brought a new dimension to film music. This decade showed that Good Music, on its own, can make a film successful at the box-office, irrespective of other factors like cast, plot etc.

1960 saw the release of the famous film ‘Bambai Ka Babu’. With Dev Anand and Suchitra Sen in the lead and music by SD Burman, this film did well to stay put in the memory of the viewers and listeners. In the same year, another ‘Bambai’ film was released, that seemed to have disappeared without making any impact, and there is nothing one hears about it.

The film ‘Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain’ from 1965 is simply a treasure house of wonderful songs. And so it is, given that the lyrics are coming from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the music is created by Khayyaam Sb, the genius of the understated melody who has remained always by the banks of the mainstream. Whatever may be the film, his creations are simply fantastic.
