on:“Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” (1971) was produced by Lekhraj Khosla and Bholu Khosla and directed by Raj Khosla. The movie had Dharmendra, Asha Parekh, Vinod Khanna, Laxmi Chhaya, Jayant, Purnima, Bhagwan, Asit Sen, Sudhir, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Manmohan, Baldeo Khosa, Bunty, Shah Agha, Uma Dutt, Soni, Paro, Manju, Ravi Khanna etc in it.
This movie was the definitive “Daaku” movie before “Sholay” (1975) came up a few years later. In fact, there were a few critics at that time who had proclaimed “Sholay” as a poor imitation of “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” (1971). 🙂
Music of this movie was its strong suit and its songs were hugely popular.
Four songs from “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” (1971) have been discussed in the past. Here is the fifth song from the movie. This song, like most songs from this movie has been sung by Lata. It is picturised on Asha Parekh. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt who guesses that this could be the final song from this movie. I request our other knowledgeable readers to help confirm/ refute this fact.

sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
ho paisa lai jaa re
ho o o
dil kaise de doon main jogi
ke badi badnaami hogi
sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
ho paisa lai jaa re
ho o o o o
dil kaise de doon main jogi
ke badi badnaami hogi
sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
maange tu mahelen do mahele
phir sochoon de doon main pehle
maange tu mahelen do mahele
phir sochoon de doon main pehle
ye mushqil hai
mera dil hai naahin koi khilona
sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
ho paisa lai jaa re
ho o o o o
dil kaise de doon main jogi
ke badi badnaami hogi
sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
haay haay haay haay re
jee ghabaraaye
naa meri haa na ban jaaye
haay haay haay haay re
jee ghabraaye
naa meri haa na ban jaaye
mere man pe tu na kar de koi jaadu tona
sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
ho paisa lai jaa re
ho o o o o
dil kaise de doon main jogi
ke badi badnaami hogi
sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
matlab hai tera ban ke jogan
saath phiroon main tere ban ban
matlab hai tera ban ke jogan
saath phiroon main tere ban ban
main phoolon pe sone waali
kaante tera bichhauna
sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
ho paisa lai jaa re
ho o o
dil kaise de doon main jogi
ke badi badnaami hogi
sona lai jaa re
ho chaandi lai jaa re
ho sona
ho chaandi

This song always reminded me of LP’s another song ‘Bindiya chamkegi choodi khankegi’ from DO RAASTE (1969). Both these films were directed by Raj Khosla.

The picturization is reminding me of this song https://atulsongaday.me/2009/10/10/main-tujhse-milne-aayi-mandir-jaane-ke-bahaane/. The location in both song appears to be same.
Song compostion is similar to this one https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2009/07/21/tere-kaaran-tere-kaaran-ter-kaaran-mere-saajan/

Thanks Atulji for posting this song. A trivia behind sending you this song-
Few months back, while talking to Pradeepji (Yippee mommemt waale. pata nahin kahaan kho gaye hain aajkal), our email conversation ended up in the women power of shopping gold, specially NRIs, with the skyrocketing price of this precious metal. So, I told him that nowadays, lady would modify this song as
Sona dai jaa re, chaandi dai jaa re, paisa dai jaa re
phir dil ko lai jaa ………. 😆
and that made me search this song on this blog. And after not finding it on the blog, I send it to Atulji.
The movie was gr8 with Laxmi Chhaya’s one of the best role.

Yes, Khyati Bhatt, this is certainly the last song from ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’. Though Asha Parekh was the heroine of this movie, it was Laxmi Chhaya in the role of the ‘bad girl’ Munnibhai, who had a meatier role. And she did such a good job of it! She also got to sing three unforgettable songs too!
