Jagmohan Sursagar was known mostly for his non-filmy songs whether in Bengali or Hindi. After the success of his songs in ‘Meghdoot’ (1945), he collaborated with Faiyyaz Hashmi and Kamal Das Gupta for recording many non-filmy Hindi songs which became very popular. Faiyyaz Hashmi was a full time employee of EMI (HMV) at Calcutta. After bifurcation of British India, Faiyyaz Hashmi was transferred to Dhaka in 1947 and to Lahore a year thereafter to strengthen the office which was affected by the migration of many of its artists to India. With this, the collaboration of these trios virtually came to an end. Thereafter, Jagmohan Sursagar recorded some more Hindi non-film songs with different lyricists such as B C Madhur, Madhuraj, Rajinder Krishan etc. But most of these songs are silent on the name of the composer. It is believed that during this period, Jagmohan himself may have composed the music for most of his non-filmy songs.
In my younger days, I had often listened to some popular NFSs of Jagmohan Sursagar on the radio. One of the most often played NFSs was ‘mat kar saaj singaar sundari’ (C.1950). Lyrics are simple yet they effectively convey the admiration of the beauty of the beloved or the lover using metaphors. Naturally, when one comes across such nicely worded lyrics, the first thing one wants to know is who wrote the lyrics. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get the name of either the lyricist or the composer of this beautiful song. These details are not available even on SAREGAMA (HMV) website. I even checked on one of his Long Playing record named ‘The best of Jagmohan Sursagar’ issued in 1967 which contains this song but neither the name of the lyricist nor the name of the music director is mentioned on the back cover detailing the songs. I would request the knowledgeable readers of this blog to throw some light on the poet and composer of this exceptionally beautiful song.
This is one of the evergreen songs of ‘shringar rasa’ which can be listened to multiple times without reaching a saturation point.
Song-Mat kar saaj singaar sundari (Jagmohan Sursagar NFS)(1950) Singer-Jagmohan Sursagar
Lyrics
mat kar saaj singaar sundari
mat kar saaj singaar sundari
mat kar saaj singaar
gahne sharmaaye se rahte

moti si tu khud ujli hai
aan aan aan aan aan
aur chanchal tu bijli si hai
aan aan aan aan aan
upar ke iss thaath baat se
upar ke iss thaath baat se
tujhko kyaa darkaaaar
mat kar saaj singaar sundari
mat kar saaj singaar
apni zulfon ko chhitraa de ae ae
honthon par tu hansi bichhaa de
apni zulfon ko chhitraa de ae ae
honthon par tu hansi bichhaa de
choti ke do hisse kar ke
choti ke do hisse kar ke
banaa galey kaa haaaar
mat kar saaj singaar sundari
mat kar saaj singaar
ek baar tu dekh le darpan
mast banaa le sundari ee ee ee ee ee ee
mast banaa le apnaa jeewan
ek baar tu dekh le darpan
mast banaa le sundari ee ee ee ee ee ee
mast banaa le apnaa jeewan
apni manmohak soorat pe
khud ho jaa balihaaaar
apni manmohak soorat pe
khud ho jaa balihaaaar
mat kar saaj singaar sundari
mat kar saaj singaar

This is one of the best and most popular and favorite of Jagmohan ji, specially for people with limited knowledge about this singer and I was one of this group during 70s.
Sadanandji, thank you for the post and song. You reminded me, my Golden days of radio vividh bharati. 🙂
BTW, I know the reason now as why there were only two songs posted today and only few comments on the blog. First day of 4th test of India vs Australia test, so can imagine what Atulji and all cricket premees are busy with. 🙂

I can understand Atulji. The work you are doing, maintaining this blog, wo koi chane chabaane ki baat nahin hai. Job, family and then friends of “Atul song a day” 🙂 Sabhi ke saath nyaay karna bada kathin hai. As a householder, balancing between duties and fun is a very tough task. We are very thankful to you for all your hard work in giving all music lovers the happiness by making and maintaining this blog. 🙂

Correction in my previous comment. So far, three songs are posted today. The song “dard mandon ka jahaan mein…..” was in my spam folder 😦
Sorry Atulji.
