Sharm aati hai magar

This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
This is Lata’s second solo number in the film Padosan (1968). It is interesting to note that there are no male-female duets in the film. The hero and heroine do not get any chance to sing with each other. No, not even across the street from their respective windows.
Bindu (Saira Banu), after snubbing Bholaa (Sunil Dutt) for his country bumpkin nature, does fall in love with him or better said for his ‘voice’. But when she realises it is his master’s voice in reality, which guides him, she will have nothing to do with him. But when he takes up a beating from thugs hired by his rival in love (Mehmood), she falls for him and his true nature (whatever that might be), while nursing him back to health.
The audio version of this song has three stanzas, the filmed version only two. The first stanza is missing in the film.

Song-Sharm aati hai magar (Padosan) (1968), Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
sharm aati hai magar
aaj ye kehnaa hogaa
sharm aati hai magar
aaj ye kehnaa hogaa
ab hame
aap ke kadmon hi mein
rehnaa hogaa
sharm aati hai magar
aap se roothh ke ham jitnaa jiye khaaq jiye
aap se roothh ke ham jitnaa jiye khaaq jiye
kayi ilzaam liye aur kayi ilzaam diye
aaj ke baad magar kuchh bhi na kehnaa hogaa aa
ab hamen
aap ke kadmon hi mein
rehnaa hogaa
sharm aati hai
hmm hmm
der ke baad ye samjhe hain muhabbat kyaa hai
ab hamen chaand ke jhoomar ki zaroorat kyaa hai
pyaar se badh ke bhalaa kaun saa gehnaa hogaa aa
ab hamen
aap ke kadmon hi mein
rehnaa hogaa
sharm aati hai magar
aaj ye kehnaa hogaa
aap ke pyaar kaa beemaar hamaaraa dil hai
aap ke pyaar kaa beemaar hamaaraa dil hai
aap ke gham kaa khareedaar hamaaraa dil hai
aap ko apnaa koi dard na sehnaa hogaa
ab hamen
aap ke kadmon hi mein
rehnaa hogaa
sharm aati hai magar
aaj ye kehnaa hogaa
sharm aati hai hmm

Padosan without RDB is like shakkar ke bina shira 🙂
All songs have their own charm. From Mere saamne waali khidki mein…., Bindu ri bindu…., Ek chatur naar karke …… to Bhai battoor…… Main chali main chali and Sharm aati hai magar…..
Only RDB could do this karishma. Thank you Harveyji for the post.
BTW, we have posted only four songs from this movie 😦

I like it a lot too. I love the slight tinge of sadness in it.
