Tu ishq se darr

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
GUNAAH (1953) was produced under the banner of Ambitious Pictures and directed by Kidar Sharma. The star cast included Jagdev, Geeta Bali, Vijay Laxmi, Jankidas, Pratima Devi, A S Gyani, Pesi Patel, Baby Naaz, Tun Tun etc. The film had seven songs of which two songs have been covered in the blog. All the songs were written by Kidar Sharma. Of the 7 songs, Snehal Bhatkar composed six songs and Roshan composed one ghazal “mere khayaalon mein aake gale laga jaa mujhe”.
I have chosen for discussion one of the songs from the film ‘tu ishq se dar bemaut na mar ke’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar and penned by Kidar Sharma. The song seems to be written in an uneven metre. So Snehal Bhatkar, the music director had to compose the song in a different way. He made the tune as if the playback singer was reciting the poem in a faster pace. To make the song melodious, he took recourse to laawni folk music of Maharashtra with orchestration and dholak beats which goes with it. The end result is that the song turns out to be rhythmic.
Kidar Sharma’s poetry had always been close to the harsh realities of life. Some of his lyrics of the songs such as the one I have given the link above are very hard hitting. In this song, he is cautioning the pitfalls of love more or less in the same manner as he had cautioned in a song diya jisne dil lut gayaa wo bechaara from ‘Bhanwraa’ (1944).
It is said that Majrooh Sultanpuri was an expert in writing lyrics for pre-composed tunes in such an extent that it was difficult to judge whether the tune was composed first or lyrics were written first. Similarly, Snehal Bhatkar was regarded as one of the expert music directors who could compose songs on any kind of lyrics.
Only the audio clip of the song is available. Since the song is rhythmic and foot tapping one, I guess this song may have been picturised on an actress performing a dance in the film.
Song-Tu ishq se dar (Gunaah)(1953) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Snehal Bhatkar
Lyrics
tu ishq se dar
bemaut na mar ke
ye dard wo dard hai jiski to koi dawaa hi nahin
ye wo jaadoo hai jiska maara huaa
maara huaa
koi aaj talak to jiyaa hi nahin
tu ishq se dar
bemaut na mar ke
ye dard wo dard hai jiski koi dawaa hi nahi
ye wo jaadoo hai jiska maara huaa
maara huaa
koi aaj talak to jiyaa hi nahin
nahin koi dillagi dekho dil ka lagaana
dil ka lagaana
ho dil ka lagaana
dil dekar meri jaan pade pachhtaana
pade pachhtaana
pade pachhtaana
har majnu aankh ladaa ke huaa deewaana
huaa diwaana
huaa diwaana
jal bhun kar khakh huwaa
khakh huaa
har ik parwaanaa
jal bhun kar khaakh huwaa
khaakh huwaa
har ik parwaana
tu ishq se dar bemaut na mar ke
ye dard wo dard hai jiski koi dawaa hi nahi
ye wo jaadoo hai jiska maara huaa
maara huaa
koi aaj talak to jiyaa hi nahin
dekar haath nishaani saath biyaabaanon ki
biyaabaano ki
biyaabaano ki
ujdi rahi duniya phir bhi armaano ki
ho armaanon ki
ho armaanon ki
us heer ko ranjh mila nahi raanjha lekar
kis soni ne sukh paaya hai dil dekar
haay dil dekar
tu ishq se dar bemaut na mar ke
ye dard wo dard hai
jiski to koi dawa hi nahi
ye wo jaadoo hai jiska maara huaa
maara huaa
koi aaj talak to jiyaa hi nahin
