Ah, finally. I have with me now, the song from the 1946 film ‘Durbaan’ that has been eluding me so far. Graciously and thankfully sent to me by another collector friend. Readers will recall that this is the one song from 1946, still waiting to be posted, as we traverse the early years of Mukesh’s career. As per records, by the end of 1946, Mukesh had sung 21 songs in eleven films (starting from 1941).
‘Durbaan’ is an obscure film from 1946. Produced under the banner of Harishchandra Pictures, it is directed by SM Yusuf. The list actors for this film includes Kumar, Kaushalya, Yakub, Sulochana Chatterjee, Narang and Leela Misra. There is very little information available for film, and I request other knowledgeable readers and friends on the blog to please add more information.
The film has 10 songs, of which 8 are written by M Naseem, and 2 by Tanvir Naqvi. This song is from the pen of Tanvir Naqvi. Music is composed by Gulshan Sufi. This information is as per the Geet Kosh. However, Harish Raguvanshi ji, the compiler of the Mukesh Geet Kosh has informed that the music for this particular song is composed by Shankar Dasgupta. This information is as per the label of the specific record for this song.
This song is a duet sung by Binapani Mukherjee and Mukesh.It appears to be an exchange of the ‘jaadugar sainyyaan’ type. The lady is announcing that she is a snake, very poisonous and the gentleman claims to be a magician, who can change the poison to nectar with the music of his ‘been’, the snake charmer’s musical instrument.
