This is the only song of Ijaazat (1987) missing on this blog. For me the songs of Ijaazat have a special place in my heart. I still remember the audio cassette, which I bought. It was a rainy August afternoon. I knew exactly what I wanted to buy from my first earnings through giving tuitions. I came back from the college and I think I must have listened to that cassette on that day nearly hundred times. But that is just half the reason for its special status. In the 80s the music in Hindi films was IMHO losing quality. The arrival of Ijaazat came as a whiff of fresh air. More than that, it reinstated my faith in Pancham once again.
Gulzar uses the birhan theme in this song and instead of letting the protagonist sing that her lover has not come, he makes her put the blame on the evening, which has come empty-handed. She is sad, she is melancholic, but even the release of the sorrow through tears is not given to her. The evening will go away unw(h)etted. Amazing lyrics by an amazing poet!

Harveyji,
Yesterday only, out of curiosity, I was reading RDB’s profile on Wiki and read about his music in this movie.

Just read under the section titled “Decline”

Mukhda(that too only 1st line) of a Pancham compositon from Anamika(“Jaaoon toh kahaan jaaoon sab kuchch yahin hai, tere dar ke baahar to na duniya na dil hai”)tunewise got resemblances with the mukhda of “Khali haath shaam aayee hai”. I may be wrong, But I get a vague resemblance about the mukhdas of these two songs.

Yes those were dry decades with no rhythm to speak of. The songs of this movie are very good.
