It is now been forty one years that she passed away, and all of just 42 years of age. The singer who became a legend in her own lifetime, short as it may have been, just the same as her celebrated spouse. Called the nightingale of the Hindi film music, she brought a completely unique signature voice that she applied to her songs, and left such a wonderful legacy that will surely delight generations upon generations of listeners.
Remembering Geeta Dutt on the forty first anniversary of her passing away.
Her active career spanned about twenty five years from 1946 to 1970-71. During this time, she has recorded almost 1,500 songs (as per the http://www.geetadutt.com website). Of these, 1,200 songs are from Hindi films and the remaining are non film and songs in Bengali and other languages.
Starting with the film ‘Bairam Khan’ (1946), her debut song is a group song with Shamshad Begum, Naseem Begum and Munawwar Sultana. The song – “Jab Chaand Jawaan Hoga” was composed by Ghulam Haider Sb. After about thirty songs, in 1947 she recorded “Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gayaa” under the baton of Sachin Dev Burman. The unprecedented appeal and the uncharacteristic success of this iconic number established her firmly in the Hindi film world, a world that would sway and be hilarious, with numbers like “Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo”, and become pensive and wept with her with the numbers like “Waqt Ne Kiya, Kya Haseen Sitam”. And in between, is a spread of another twelve hundred numbers, each with its own magic and its own charisma.
Today, I present what is possibly one of her last few recordings, made for a film that remained incomplete and never released. This song is such a fabulous experience, an unbelievable trip down the lane of emotions. And the mind simply wows, and wonders, where this gem has been, and where, at which turn did we lose this voice, that sounds oh so alive. This film,‘Insaan Aur Insaan’ is an incomplete film from the decade of 70s, and given that Geeta ji was no more in 1972, this song has probably been recorded sometimes during the years 1970, 71 or 72.
The song is penned by Taajdar Taj, and the music composition is by a duo of music directors Ratandeep-Hemraj. As per the Geet Kosh, this duo was active in the 1960s and 70s, and there are about ten films listed for them, till 1980 (the cut off date of the current set of Geet Kosh volumes under print).
Listen to this most enchanting sound of a voice that faded away too soon. A singularly beautiful song that is sure to haunt the bylanes of mind and memories forever and ever.
Song-Latt uljhi hai suljha de morey baalma (Insaan Aur Insaan)(1971)(UR) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Tajdaar Taj, MD-Ratandeep Hemraj
Lyrics
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma
o o o
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma
main na haath lagaaungi
saari umar bitaaungi
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma
main na haath lagaaungi
saari umar bitaaungi
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma
o o o
darpan kea aage
bindiya jo chamke
choodi jo boley
ho daiyyaa choodi boley
darpan kea aage
bindiya jo chamke
choodi jo boli
ho daiyyaa choodi boli
pyaase badan ko
dasney lagi hai
bedard choli
haaye is bairan ko
samjhaa de morey baalma
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma
main na haath lagaaungi
saari umar bitaaungi
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma
o o o
tere bina
ye sooni padi hai
sej suhaani
o sainyyaan sej suhaani
tere bina
ye sooni padi hai
sej suhaani
o sainyyaan sej suhaani
sautaniyaa ban ke
roka hai jis ne
tujhko o jaani
haaye wo naukariya
thhukraa de morey baalma
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma
main na haath lagaaungi
saari umar bitaaungi
latt uljhi hai
suljhaa de morey baalma

ओ ओ ओ

Sudhirji,
Thanks for the post. Agree with Nitinbhai. I remember listening this song on Radio Vividhbharti. Her voice sounds like in Mujhe jaan na kaho meri jaan…. Anubhav-71 like you have said, must be her last recording.

This song reminds me of “Bidiya chamkegi” (Do Raaste, 1969). The question is, which one came first and what is the link between the two. Were Ratandeep Hemraj associated with LP? Some knowledgeable followers of these pages may shed light on this.
