We in this blog discuss songs of the golden era. Many of these songs are well known songs, but quite a few of them are lesser known songs as well. It gives us special satisfaction when we discuss rare songs.
In the process of discussing these songs, we also discuss the artists (singers, lyricists and music directors) involved in creation of these songs. By now we have come to realise that the golden era of Hindi movie music was created not only by well known artists, but lesser known ones too had played important roles in enriching that era.
Likewise, the artists who appear on the picturisation of these songs also played their parts in these songs. These artists too could be either well known ones or lesser known ones. In the process of discussing old songs, we have come to know about many artists of the past who were earlier unknown to us. Personally I was not even aware of artists like Shyama and Shakila before I began this blog.
Thanks to Memsaab’s blog, I as well as other music lovers have learnt a lot about lesser known artists of Hindi movies. It is thanks to Memsaab that many of us now know about Laxmi Chhaaya, Bela Bose, Nazir Kashmiri, Ted Lyons etc. and are able to identify them when we watch old Hindi movies and their songs.
Memsaab did not just discuss these artists, she tried and became friends with some of them as well. For instance, she befriended Ted Lyons, and that opened up a vast new open world of lesser known artists to her and she was kind enough to share her new found knowledge with us through her blog.
Just when she was beginning to get noticed by movie makers, she stopped working and emigrated out of India in 1967. Today she is settled in UK and is leading a contented retired life.
Thanks to Memsaab, Edwina is now a well known figure among old movie lovers who are into blogging, facebook etc. She is friends with a few regulars of this blog and in fact a few regulars have even met her.
Today (22 july 2013) happens to be Edwina’s birthday. On this occasion, here is a rare song from an obscure movie called “Vazeer e Azam” (1961). This song is sung by Geeta Dutt and it a rare song in which Edwina figures as a solo dancer. Edwina was mainly known for figuring in western dances, but here she dons desi outfits and performs a desi dance.
The song is written by Hairat Sitapuri. Music is composed by Robin Bannerji.
We take this opportunity to wish Edu ji a very happy birthday and many happy returns of the day.
PS- I have liberally used material from Memsaab’s blog in the writeup because her blog is the best source of material on Edwina. Hopefully Greta ji will not mind.

Song-Kahe kya nazar se nazar (Vazeer e Azam)(1961) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Hairat Sitapuri, MD-Robin Bannerji
Lyrics
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
phir ek anokha jaadoo chalega
tujh pe mujhpe
o jaadoogar
o jaadoogar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
koi aisa fasaana suna
mujhe apna deewaana bana
duniya to duniya hai
duniya se ab na dar
phir ek anokha jaadoo chalega
tujh pe mujhpe
o jaadoogar
o jaadoogar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
maan le ye kahin na kahin
miley aasmaan se zameen
phir kyun na tum ko yaqeen
hota apne dil par
phir ek anokha jaadoo chalega
tujh pe mujhpe
o jaadoogar
o jaadoogar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
mat soch tu kal ki baat
ye din ye khushi ki raat
keh keh le tu dil ki baat
tu aaj mere dilbar
phir ek anokha jaadoo chalega
tujh pe mujhpe
o jaadoogar
o jaadoogar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
kahe kya nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
Am so happy to see a post here on Edwina. Or Edu, as we lovingly call her.
Thanks to Greta (and how wonderful is she!), we have got to know so many lesser known artistes of yesteryear. And Edu is one of those that some of us have got to know more closely now.
She is such a fun-loving, positive-minded person. And really sweet!
Wish you a very happy birthday, Edu! And many more to come.
And thanks a lot to Atul for this post today. A very pleasant surprise! 🙂

On the original soundtrack in the film, the mukhda starts as under:
kahen kyaa nazar se nazar
samajh le agar bekhabar
It is said that Censor Board had objected to the lyrics of mukhda which was changed on the film’s soundtrack since 78 RPM records of the song were already released with the original mukhda. One can notice that voice of the singer for the changed mukhda lines are not of Geeta Dutt but some unidentified singer.
This blog discusses Bollywood songs of yesteryears. Every song has a brief description, followed by a video link, and complete lyrics of the song. This is a labour of love, where “new” songs are added every day, and that has been the case for over SEVENTEEN years. This blog has more than 19700 song posts by now. This blog is active and online for over 6000 days since its beginning on 19 July 2008.
