This article is the 20600th song post of the blog. This article is the 100th song post of Dattaram in the blog as a music director.
| Blog Day : | 6652 | Post No. : | 20600 |
Slowly and steadily, we reach the landmark of yet another blog century, namely the blog century number 206. Or in other words, blog post number 20600.The previous century post had appeared on 13 August 2026 and it was published by Sudhir Jee. Not just the century post, bulk of posts leading up to that century post were published by him whereas I was absent from action for more than a month.
Today is 4 October 2026. So this century is appearing 52 days after the previous century. The reason for this slow pace is known to the regulars. What is important and heartening to note is that the blog continued to be active despite my absence thanks to the active participation of the other contributors. Sudhir Jee published bulk of posts sent by the contributors during this period. The contributors themselves went out of their way in ensuring that the blog continued to function normally, even if the rate of posts came down.
It was so heartening to find Arunkumar Deshmukh jee, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, take up the responsibility of Yippying movies where only one song from the movie was left to be covered. Thanks to his initiative, where he sent over 30 YIPPEE posts, movies that got YIPPEED in the calender year 2026 has crossed the century mark.
Likewise, our other regular contributor and in house researcher Sadanand Kamath jee has seen to it that movies that were not yet representedin the blog have made their debuts in the blog. Thanks to his initiative, the number of movies that have made their debut in this year 2026 has crossed century mark.
I had recently started a series where I would provide list of actresses (starting with a letter of the alphabet) who had lip synced in the voice of Asha Bhonsle and then introduce a “new” actress who was not yet represnted in the blog while lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. This initiative motivated three or our regulars, viz Sadanand Kamath jee as well as Pamir Harvey and Prakashchandra. Thanks to their enthusiastic particiation, now we are aware of many more actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. This initiative could well end up listing all actresses who have ever lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. In future, we may think of similar exercises for other major singers as well.
While the blog was seeing cenuries of YIPPEED movies as well as debuting movies, artists approaching their maiden centuries in the blog were getting neglected. There are artists in the blog who are languishing in their 90s for months, and in some cases for years. It is high time I acted to take them to their maiden blog centuries.
In this post, I have decided to cover the composition of a music director who was languishing in his ninetees from 2023. He is Dattaram, who is mostly known as the assistant music director cum music arranger for Shankar Jaikishan.
Dattaram Wadkar was from Goa. While other Goans such as Sebastian Desouza, Chic Chocolate etc were trained in western musical instruments and they got work in Bombay Film industry mainly as orchestra, Dattaram was trained in percussion instruments such as Dholak, Tabla, Daff etc and he got to work in the rhythm section of Shankar Jaikishan. His characteristic rhythm that he created became known in the Film industry as “Datta Theka”.
Dattaram got his break as an independent music director in “Ab Dilli Door Nahin”(1957) thanks to the recommendation of Shankar Jaikishan. Raj Kapoor, the producer’s apprehensions were allayed by Shankar Jaikishan by assuring him that they would assist Dattaram if needed. Dattaram fully lived up to the faith shown in his abilities by Shankar Jaikishan. This movie has that iconic children’s song Chun chun karti aayi chidiyaa daal ka daana laayee chidiya .
Dattaram’s next assignment as an independent music director was “Parvarish”(1958). Here too he created iconic songs such as the sad song Aasoo bhari hain ye jeewan ki raahen and happy song Masti bhara hai samaa.
Unlike Ravi, Kalyanji Anandji and Laxmikant Pyarelal, who started as assistant music directors and went on to became independent music directors, Dattaram never broke off from Shankar Jaikishan. He would create music as an independent music director and at the same time he would keep working under Shankar Jaikishan as well. Perhaps it was for this reason that he did not get too many independent assignments. He worked as an independent music director in 18 Hindi movies (plus a few regional movies). All his Hindi movies are represented in the blog. In fact, 16 out of 18 Hindi movies where he composed music as an independent music director are already YIPPEED in the blog. These YIPPEED movies are:- “Ab Dilli Door Nahin”(1957), “Parvarish”(1958), “Qaidi No. 911″(1959), “Santaan”(1959), “Kaala Aadmi”(1960), “Shrimaan Satyawaadi”(1960), “Dark Street”(1961), “First Love”(1961), “Zindagi Aur Khwaab”(1961), “Neeli Aankhen”(1962), “Jab Se Tumhen Dekha Hai”(1963), “Raaka”(1965), “Tarzan Comes To Delhi”(1965), “Baalak”(1969), “Beqasoor”(1969) and “Choron Ka Chor”(1969).
That leaves us with only Two Hindi movies that are as yet unYIPPEED in the blog. These movies are “Farishta”(1968) and “Ek Din Aadhi Raat”(1971). In addition, some of his regional movies also offer opportunities to post his songs in the blog. Two songs of his Magadhi movie “Morey Man Mitwa”(1965) are represented in the blog.
In the movies listed above, Dattaram got to compose a little over 100 songs in all. As of now, Dattaram is on 99 songposts in the blog as a music director.
For this post, I have chosen a song from “Farishta”(1968). This B grade movie had Dev Kumar, Jagdish Raj, Nivedita, Junior Mehmood, Master Shahid, Sudhir, Gajanan Jagirdar, Tuntun,Asha Nadkarni etc in it.. This forgotten movie had failed at the box office therefore the songs of this movie failed to get popular though it has some songs with catchy tunes.
“Farishta”(1968) had five songs in it. Three songs from the movie have been covered in the blog.
Here is the fourth song from “Farishta”(1968) to appear in the blog. This song is a nice hummable song sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Asad Bhopali is the lyricist. Music is composed by Dattram, of course.
Only audio of the song is available. My guess is that this song was picturised on thelaed pair of Dev Kumar and Nivedita. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
With this song, the blog completes 10600 songs in the blog. Dattaram completes 100 song posts in the blog as a music director. That way he is lucky that he composed music for a little over 100 songs and they are available. We have examples of talented but unlucky music directors such as Sajjad Hussain, Ganesh etc whose total number of compositions add up to less that 100 songs so they will never be able to complete their centuries in the blog.
With this song, we achieve the blog century landmark as well as music director Dattaram’s maiden century landmark in the blog. How curious that we should cover songs from “Darinda” as well as “Farishta” one after the other today. 🙂
I take this opportnity to thank one and all for their continued support and encouragement for this blog. It is this support and encouragement that is fuelling that musical bandwagon which is now nearing the next thousandth song milestone which is just 400 songs away from us. Here is hopng that this blog keeps moving on and on and we keep finding musical gems as well as keep reaching newer landmarks on the way.

wo ladke ho tum

ho sakta hai kal ban jaaye
wo zindagee kee saathhee
ho ek naujawaan ladka
mera naya mulaaqaatee

Hearty Congratulations to one all all for yet another century of song-posts.
The VCD of the film appears to be available though the print is considered to be rare. And so with some difficulty the video of the song could be traced.
