“Aasra” (1966) was produced by Madan Mohla and directed by Satyen Bose under the banner of Seven Arts Pictures. I have mentioned in the past that the “puraani filmon ke geet” programme of Radio Ceylon from 7-30 to 8 AM used to be a very “boring” programme for youngsters like me during late 1960s and all of 1970s. I had become a big fan of Kishore Kumar after I heard his song “Mere saamne waali khidki mein” from “Padosan” (1968) and I wondered why the oldtime singers would not sing like Kishore Kumar.

Remembering Sardul Kwatra on the anniversary of his passing away (6th July, 2005).

Sardul Kwatra – An impressive and talented composer who failed to impress, in a film world where the sheer number of artists in the 1950s and 60s made it impossible for each one to make a mark. However, in their own limited ways, such artists have left behind musical memories that are no less remarkable. And the wonder is the treasure that is hiding in the obscure, unheard songs that simply did not come to the attention of the listening public for many a reason.

Mukti (1977) stars Shashi Kapoor, Vidya Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar and Bindiya Goswami. Shashi Kapoor plays Vidya Sinha’s husband. This happy couple has a daughter, who would grow up to be Bindiya Goswami. In the happier times of this small family, the father sings a lullaby to his daughter. As usual in films, these happy times don’t last forever and the father goes missing and then it is the mother’s turn to sing the lullaby with a similar mukhdaa but different antaras. Both versions are included here.

Today I am posting the 5th song by Mukesh from the film ‘Tohfaa’ (1947). As we make progress on the trip to listening to the voice of Mukesh in some well known, and some not so well known and downright rare songs, we are now coming close to the end of the 1947 list of songs by Mukesh. After this post, only two more of his songs from 1947 are to be posted.
