Today (9 september 2013) is Ganesh Chaturthi and Lord Ganesh is worshipped on this day. Lord Ganesh has the head of an elephant. How he got this head has an explanationin mythology. Here is how it happened:
Once upon a time, the Goddess Gauri (consort of Lord Shiva), while bathing, created Ganesha as a pure white being out of the mud of Her Body and placed Him at the entrance of the house. She told Him not to allow anyone to enter while she went inside for a bath. Lord Shiva Himself was returning home quite thirsty and was stopped by Ganesha at the gate. Shiva became angry and cut off Ganesha’s head as He thought Ganesha was an outsider.
When Gauri came to know of this she was really mad. To console her grief, Shiva ordered His servants to cut off and bring to Him the head of any creature that might be sleeping with its head facing north. The servants went on their mission and found only an elephant in that position. The sacrifice was thus made and the elephant’s head was brought before Shiva. The Lord then joined the elephant’s head onto the body of Ganesha.
Lord Shiva made His son worthy of worship at the beginning of all undertakings, marriages, expeditions, studies, etc. He ordained that the annual worship of Ganesha should take place on the 4th day of the bright half of Bhadrap
“Shri Ganesh Vivaah” (1955) was a Chitraveena Production. It was directed by Jaswant Jhaweri. The movie had Durga Khote, Prem Adeeb, Nirupa Roy, Jeevan, Sapru, B. M. Vyas, Arvind, Shalini etc in it. The movie described the various episodes in the life of Lord Ganesha including the above mentioned episode as well.
Here is a song from the movie. The song is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. only the audio of this song is available but it is clear that this song takes place after Lord Shiva beheads Ganesh and this song is a remonstration against that act.
Gopal Singh Nepali is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

bhagwan tumne kya kiya
ye kaun sa badla liya
jisko diya tumne janam
uska hi jeewan le liya
bhagwan tumne kya kiya
bhagwan tumne kya kiya
ye kaun sa badla liya
jisko diya tumne janam
uska hi jeewan le liya
bhagwan tumne kya kiya
maana ke tera ab jag saara
aa aa aa aa
chanda suraj se ujiyara
aa aa aa aa
maana ke tera ab jag saara
chanda suraj se ujiyara
par jise tumhi ne bujha diya
tere hi ghar ka thaa diya
bhagwan tumne kya kiya
tum khel maaran ka yu khelo
o o o o
jab umar dhale tab tan lelo
o o o o
tum khel maaran ka yoon khelo
jab umar dhale tab tan lelo
par bhole nath kaha tumne
ek bhola bachpan le liya
bhagwan tumne kya kiya
kehte hain tum rakhwaale ho
o o o o
jo maango dene wale ho
o o o o
kehte hai tum rakhwale ho
jo maango dene wale ho
par sada charan jo dhoti rahi
uss naari na dhan le liya
bhagwan tumne kya kiya
bhagwan tumne kya kiya
ye kaun sa badla liya
jisko diya tumne janam
uska hi jeewan le liya
bhagwan tumne kya kiya
