Main khoj khoj kar haari

Posted on: September 14, 2013

“Aage Badho” (1947) was a movie on a progressive topic and it dealt with an important social issue.

Here is what Sudhir jee had to say about this movie in his comments to a previous song of this movie.

This movie was considered very much ahead of its times, because it dramatized a very delicate theme, that of widow remarriage. That explains the title of the movie. In 1947, this was too progressive a theme for the society of that time.

Dev Anand is indeed the lead actor / hero, named Udai, in the movie, opposite to Khursheed, who plays the role of Sarla. The other two names i.e. Vasant Thengdi and Kusum Deshpande play the roles of Sarla’s parents, Badri Prasad and Jamuna. Jamuna is the step mother to Sarla (in fact Badri Prasad’s third wife). Badri Prasad is an “aiyaash” (playboy) type person, which explains his multiple marriages, and his ongoing extra-marital flings.

Sarla’s marriage is fixed. The wedding takes place, but a fireworks accident happens on the evening of the wedding, after the ceremony is solemnized, and the newlywed groom dies in this accident. Sarla is a widow, even before her doli leaves her home. After this accident, her step mother treats her even worse. In fact the step mother’s brother makes advances towards Sarla; she resists, and in turn is blamed for trying to seduce him. Sarla is shocked, she runs away and tries to commit suicide. Udai (Dev Anand) saves her from the river, and brings her to his village and home. Udai is person of progressive thinking. He takes care of her, and he encourages Sarla to think of getting married again.

The rest of the story is about the relationship that develops between Sarla and Udai, plus a complex narrative of tragic sequences; but eventually ending with “happily ever after”.

Regarding Khursheed herself; the actress – singer Khursheed Bano started her film career in 1931 and worked in Hindi movies till 1948, whereafter she migrated to Pakistan. She passed away in 2001 in Karachi.

Six songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the seventh and final song from the movie. This song is sung by Khursheed and the picturisation shows her singing this sad song in a temple in front of the idols of Lord Ram and Sita.

Amar Verma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sudhir Phadke.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

With this song, “Aage Badho” (1947) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

saara jag bharmaaye
piya-daras ki aas lagaaye
bhatak rahi dukhiyaari

aayi sharan tihaari
prabhu ji aayi sharan tihaari

prabhu ji ee ee

jab marne ko ji kehta thhaa
tab jeene ko mazboor kiya
abb jeene ke din aaye to
jeene ka sahaara door kiya
abb kaun jagaaye tere bin
abb kaun jagaaye tere bin
soyi taqdeer hamaari
