BHANWRAA (1944) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Kidar Sharma. The star cast included K L Saigal, Monica Desai, Arun Ahuja, Kamala Chatterjee, Yakub, Brijmala etc. There were 11 songs in the films written by Kidar Sharma (9), Swami Ramanand Sarswati (1) and Pandit Indra Chandra (1) which were composed by Khemchand Prakash. Out of 11 songs, K L Saigal sang as many as 6 songs which have already been covered in this blog.

There is an interesting trivia as to how this film was made with K L Saigal in the lead role. Sometime in 1943, Chandulal Shah of Ranjit Movietone decided to make a film on the life of Tansen with K L Saigal. Accordingly, a contract was signed by Ranjit Movietone with K L Saigal for a fixed period. After completion of the film ‘Tansen’ (1943), there were still 9 days left out of the contracted period of K L Saigal. Chandulal Shah asked Kidar Sharma whether he had any story for a film which could be finished in 9 days. Kidar Sharma offered his story ‘Bhanwraa’ which was approved by Chandulal Shah. Kidar Sharma finished the shooting within 9 days. [Source: The One and Lonely Kidar Sharma by Kidar Sharma]. It is said that Kidar Sharma always one or two stories complete with dialogues and screen play for the film up in his sleeve, just for such occasions.

‘Bhanwraa’ (1944) was a romantic comedy. Mr Sudhir Kapur has given a short synopsis of the film’s in his comments on ye wo jagah hai jahaan ghar luttaye jaate hain which I am reproducing below :

Two young friends, Pancham (played by KL Saigal) and Rekhab (played by Arun Kumar Ahuja) come to the city in search of employment and to make a fortune. The time period is the first half of 1940s. The only accommodations they can find and afford are single rooms on rent basis. Rekhab gets a room that is just underneath a room rented by a body builder pehalwan (played by Yakub). And Pancham gets a room underneath another room, rented by two sisters Bindu (played by Kamla Chatterjee) and Indu (played by Monica Desai), both having a keen interest in dance. Pancham gets a job as music and singing teacher only to discover that Indu is also employed at the same place to teach dance. So what follows is a romantic comedy of sorts, on expected lines. Pancham and Indu falls for each other. Rekhab falls for Bindu, but is hesitant to express himself. So the pehalwan comes to his help; with his help, Rekhab builds a great physique and then woos his lady love Bindu. And the two couples finally end up living happily ever after.

As I mentioned in one of my earlier write-ups, songs sung by other singers in films in which K L Saigal was acting used to get eclipsed by his songs. I am presenting one of such songs ‘teri pee pee ke pukaaron ne dil loot liya’ sung by Amirbai Karnataki. The song is written by Pandit Indra Chandra and it is set to music by Khemchand Prakash. Only the audio clip of the song is available but considering the fact that Amirbai Karnataki has sung one more solo and two songs with K L Saigal, I guess that this song was picturised on Monica Desai.

What a lovely song with a sonorous voice of Amirbai Karnataki which I heard for the first time only a couple of days back.

The video link given above seems to have been withdrawn. Since alternative videos of the song was not available on YT, I have made a new video from mp3 clip of the song and have uploaded the same. The new video clip:
