When Atul-ji was kind enough to post, at a very short notice, my Ankahee’s Pandit Bhimsen-ji’s bhajan, I started looking at the listing of Jaidev’s composition already covered. I realised that many of the gems of my favourite Music Director Jaidev are still waiting to be posted. So in the new series, which I will call ‘Creations of Jaidev’, I have selected a Raagamala from the 1977 film ‘Alaap’. So this presentation is also in the new series ‘Filmi RaagMaalas’. I think this is one of the last few Raagmalikas composed by any music director of Hindi films.
Produced by N C Sippy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee and directed by the later, Alaap (1977) had Amitabh, Rekha, Chhaya Devi, Om Prakash, Sanjeev Kumar, Farida Jalal, Asrani, Manmohan Krishna etc. In spite of excellent star cast, superb direction and mind blowing music, the film failed at the box office, may be due to the new trend of ‘dhishum dhishum’ films and noisy music which had started since 70s onward. (This might be entirely the opinion of minority, which includes me and not stated here to offend majority new trend followers)
‘Alaap’ had music as its central theme and its music was composed by veteran music director Jaidev. In the story hero Amitabh along with the heroine Rekha are learning music in the real ‘Guru-Shishya’ style from an old lady Chhaya Devi, who was named as Sarju Bai a state singer from Varanashi living in the same city. Manmohan Krishna is seen doing Tabla sangat.
The song has been woven with ragas Yaman, Behag, Bhairavi, Patdeep and Sur Malhar. The unusual singers selected for this composition are Madhurani, Fayyaz and Yesudas, mainly due to their excellent command over classical music.
Madhurani Faizabadi, today, is one of the greatest gazal ‘Artist of Artists’, known to gazal lovers as ‘Malika-e-Gazal’, a Guru to the most of the gazal singers like Chhaya Ganguli, Penaaz Masani, Dilraj Kaur etc. Many famous gazal singers have been inspired and have adopted her unique singing style.
Fayyaz is a famous Marathi natya sangeet stalwart. Her ‘adaa’ as a ‘laavani’ singer is very much appreciated by the Marathi audience.
Yesudas is not new to the Hindi Film music listeners. He is an expert singer in both Karnatic as well as Hindustani classical music.
In the Video version, the last composition ‘Barase badarya’ in raga ‘Sur Malhar’ is missing, so I have included the complete audio version, from my YouTube site.

Thank you for the full audio version and lyrics of rare song from my favourite movie “Aalaap”
I think this is the same Chhaya Devi who also starred in Hrishikesh Mukerjee`s Rang birangi(1983), in the role of Om Prakash`s wife, In that movie also one Semi classical song is there, sung by Kumari Faiyyaz(“Mriganayani chandramukhi”), which was picturised on elderly couple om prakash and Chhaya devi. I think this Chhaya devi is famous actress from Bengali film Industry.

Chhaya Devi is also ‘Kothe ki Ammi’ in the film ‘Mamta’. as can be seen in the posting ‘Sanwaraa tore naina laage’ by Sudhirjee on January 31st.

i have heard from my parents about Fayyaz ji, and surely may have heard her marathi songs. (i think she have also done acting in some marathi films?)
