After a gap of almost a week or so, I am returning to the series,” DEBUT OR FIRST FILM SONGS”,with the 9th song .

Readers will recollect that while discussing the Debut song of Madhubala Jhaveri, I had spoken of (or rather written about ) COMETS in the film industry. Today we will take a look at one more such comet, who came, sang songs and returned from where he came-on his own free will. It was not that he was not getting any song assignments- there were plenty of them, but he decided to put Family commitments over over his personal ambitions.

The name of this singer is MOHAMMED HUSSAIN FAROOQI, I know, most readers may not have even heard his name. One reason is that he was a singer in the late 40s and secondly he sang only 15 songs in 12 films made between 1947 to 1950. This was also the transition period for our film industry. After Partition, many artistes migrated to Pakistan in search of greener pastures and with a fervour to build a new Nation.

This was also the period, by coincidence,in which many Iconic musical hit films were made. Just see this list of some films in that period- Dard, Do Bhai, Meera, Mirza Sahiban, Naatak, Parwana, Shehnai, Aag, Actress, Anokha Pyar, Anokhi Ada, khidki Mela, Nadiya ke paar, Pyar ki jeet, Ziddi, Andaaz, Badi Bahen, Barsaat, Baazar, Dillagi, Dulari, Ek thi Ladki, Lahore, Mahal, Namoona, Patanga, Shayar, Anmol Ratan, Aankhen, Baabul, Bawre Nain, Muqaddar, Sargam etc etc.

There was a flood of popular melodious songs and in this flood,Farooqi’s songs, though quality songs, were not able to attract much attention. He was a natural singer, without any formal training in music, but his personality and style of singing was suitable for an actor. He acted in 12 films, singing 15 songs in them. His first film song was ” Kamzoron ki nahi hai duniya” from film CHHEEN LE AAZADI-1947. This DEBUT song became instantly popular among many nationalist workers and freedom fighters in those days.

Tasleem Farooqi, his son has written a short Biographical article on Dr. Surjit Singh ji’s site. I am reproducing here an edited shorter version of the same, for our readers. I sincerely thank Dr.Surjit Singh ji for this.

” Mr. Mohammed Farooqui was born on 17th August 1915 in the city of Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan in a religious family of mohalla peerzadgan. He got his basic education in the city under the guidance of his father Haji Muniruddin. During his childhood he displayed talent in singing.
In his youth Farooqui Sahib actively participated the music; he had been always attracted to the world of music. During his schooling he performed as a singer in varied stage programmes in Rajasthan. However, his religious Haji father was against such activities. When Mohammed Farooqui completed his education, his father had visions of his son becoming a teacher, but his destination was a film studio.

At last in 1945 Farooqui Sahib came to Bombay to try his luck in the Hindi Film industry as a singer with a reference letter for the famous music director Khemchand Prakash. The only person who knew him in Bombay was Mr. Azad Farooqui, with whom Farooqui Sahib stayed for some time in old Khar. After he had struggled for a year, Khemchand Prakash asked Mr. Farooqui to see him at his house. When Farooqui Sahib went there, the legendary singer K L Saigal was also present. Khemchand Prakash introduced him to Saigal who asked Mr. Farooqui to sing a song. He sang the famous lori by Saigal, ‘soja raj kumari soja’. After hearing this Saigal Sahib was very impressed and remarked, ”There is something new in his voice”. This was enough for Mr. Farooqui to get a contract with Ranjeet Movietone on a monthly salary.

After some time he got his first film as a co-singer, but Farooqui Sahib met with real success in 1947. It was a golden year for his music career. In this year his films ‘Chheen le azadi’, ‘Duniyan ek sarai’, ‘Lakhon mein ek’ and ‘Pehli pehchan’ were released. All of his songs were well-received. In particular, the song ‘kamzoron ki naheen hai duniyan’ from the film ‘Chheen le azadi’ was popular with the freedom fighters who soon achieved the goal of an independent nation.

Another song which endeared Farooqui Sahib to both the intellectuals and working class was ‘ek musafir aye baba ek musafir jaye’ from the film ‘duniyan ek sarai’. In 1948 bhajans of the film ‘Jai hanuman’ and ‘is khak ke putle ko’ from the film ‘Mitti ke khilone’, were appreciated by the public. His last two films ‘Bhool bhulaiyan 1949’ and ‘Alakh niranjan 1950’ were also popular. Mr. Farooqui was among one of the singers who became successful without any formal musical training from a guru.

It was the end of the 1950. Farooqui’s father became seriously ill and sent a message to him to come home immediately. After all his successful films, Farooqui Sahib had to leave Bombay and thereafter never went back to sing another song.

Rest of his life was spent as a mission to help the poor section of the society with the light of education.

On 8th February 1990 Mohammed Farooqui left for heavenly abode at the age of 75 years, leaving behind family and friends to grieve for the loss of a talented personalty.

After his passing away one of his friends paid tributes like this,

Khabar kya thee mohammed aap hamein tanha chhorh jayenge,
Dil-e-rahber ko ghamgeen aur purnam banayenge,
Ab na subaha ayegee is shaam ke baad,
Bas hum to sirf aapke geet gungunayenge

The name of Mohammed Farooqui will figure on the list of many underappreciated talents for their contribution to Hindi cinema. ”

The filmography of Farooqi is- Chhin le azzadi, Duniya ek sarai,Lakhon mein Ek,pehli pehchan, Piya ghar aa jaa,Neel kamal(all 1947),Bichhade balam, jai Hanuman,Mitti ke Khiloune,Pardesi Mehmaan (all 1948),Bhool Bhulaiya-49 and Alakh Niranjan-50..

Chhin le azadi was a Ranjit movietone film. It was a costume drama. I have not seen the film myself, but what I have read about it describes it as a symbolic film, depicting Mutiny in a kingdom, ruled by an outsider, just like India.

The film had music by Hansraj Behl. All the 9 songs were penned by Pt. Indra who was a fixture for Ranjit’s 28 films in a row.he had written songs for films made by Gandharva cinetone,Sagar,Huns,Ranjit, prakash,Wadia and few early Hindi films of Gemini,Madras. He was a dialogue writer too for many films including the famous film Chandralekha-48.

The cast of the film was Veena,Ghulam mohd.,Altaf,S.Hasan,Khurshid(jr.),Amarnath etc. Khurshid Junior was Meena kumari’s elder sister. Actor ghulam Mohammed was different than Composer Ghulam Mohd. and singer Ghulam Mohd. this name too may be new to many readers. Ghulam mohd. started his career with Imperial from 1932 to 1938. In film Madhuri-1932 (First film to have its 4 songs on commercial records),he was the Villain. In daku ki ladki-33,he was Hero. Dalsukh Pancholi called him to Lahore and from 1942 to 1945,he did Khandan,Zamindar and Shirin Farhad. His role in Khandaan was lauded much. After Shirin farhad flopped miserably,he came to Bombay and did some 20 odd films like Ek din ka Sultan,Sanyasi,Bairam khan,Humjoli,Rajputani,Jugnu,Lakhon mein ek,heer Ranjha, pardesi mehmaan,Vidya etc. After this he migrated to Pakistan in the end of 1948. There he suffered a lot and died in absolute penury and unsung.

the film was directed by Aspi Irani. Aspi Irani was an important director from the early films. His full name was ASPANDIAR HORMUSJI IRANI.He was born in the Parsi colony, Panch Gardens in Dadar,Bombay on 8-10-1911. He started work in the film industry after he completed his secondary schooling and as all parsis are,due to his hard work,he soon attained a top rank in the Industry. He started directing filmsfrom 1936,the early Talkie stage, when the influence of Parsi Theatre, fantasies and dramas on folklore was the staple of stunt films. All such films had a basic structure and with a little changes here and there new films hit the screens.

There was a fixed audience for such films, but as time went by, slowly the taste of the audience changed. However Aspi Irani continued with his style till the end. He did direct few social films also but the handling of social films had a clear stamp of Aspi’s direction.
He must have directed about 50-55 films till the early 80s. Some of his films were,Naya paisa, qaidi no.911, Barood, Shabnam, Badal etc.
On a fine morning on 23rd November 1986,Aspi left his home in the morning for work and never ever returned. No one knows what happened to him. Since then there was no trace of this man and officially he was declared ‘missing since 23-11-1986′. What an end to a legend !

Let us now enjoy the DEBUT song of Mohd.Hussain Farooqi from “Chheen le Azaadi”-47.
