Very recently Atul-ji posted a classical song by Ustad Ameer Khan from Baiju Bawara. He has wonderfully written about the minority of film music listeners, who likes and could appreciate classical music.(I wish I had a small portion of his ability to put forward the ideas like him.) Being in that minority, I am thankful again to Atul-ji to post my classically based offerings, without my asking or making a stir for a quota of reservation for such minorities.
Exactly one decade later, that is in 1962, another great musical- Sur Singaar Chitra’s ‘Sangeet Samrat Tansen’ was released. S N Tripathi was its director as well as music director. Shailendra was the lyrics writer for this musical film. It starred Bharat Bhushan, Anita Guha, David, Sapru, Mukri, Sabita Chatterjee, Prem Sagar etc. The plot is about a village boy born dumb, but getting his voice back due to a miracle at a temple. With voice, comes an amazing singing talent and it was noticed by a great sage musician of Brindaban, Swami Haridas. The sage then gets the boy trained in intricacies of Hindustani classical Music, especially ‘Dhrupad-Dhamaar’ style, which was prevalent then. Manna Dey justifies the grammer and pattern of all the raagaas in dhrupad style – credit to Shree Nath Tripathi, for the marvellous music compositions.
This Raaga Maala, (Eighth in the Series), is a completion of Young Tansen’s music training. When asked by his Guru Haridaas to express and describe Classical Raagas, Taansen sings this ‘Raaga Maala’ including six Raagas, namely Bhairav, Malkauns, Hindol, Shree, Deepak and Megh Malhaar. The lyrics include names and discription of each raaga and are sung as ‘Lakshan Geet’,
The Video clip had only the first raaga Bhairav and the last Raaga Megh Malhar in it. My 78 RPM record had all six Raagas, including the middle four Raagas. I edited the Video and Audio to make this a complete presentation.
