“Punar Milan” (1964) was produced and directed by Ravindra Dave for Nagina Films. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Leela Chitnis, Jagdeep, Shashikala, Ameeta, Padma devi, Mumtaz Begum, Asit Sen, Amarnath, Raja Nene, Narmada Shankar, Gulshan, Child Shaheed, Shyamlal, Aruna etc in it.

Today (12 april 2014) is the 77th birth anniversary of Gulshan Bawra (12 april 1937-7 august 2009). On this occasion, here is a song from “Punar Milan” (1964). This song is sung by Manna Dey and Lata. The song is picturised as a stage dance song on Jagdeep and Ameeta who enact the roles of Krishna and Radha in the picturisation as a house full audience watch the performance.

Gulshan Bawra is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Arjun.

Regulars must have noticed that I was posting a few Gulshan Bawra songs regularly for the past few days. There was some method in my posting them. I was trying to ensure that Gulshan Bawra reached his century of songs in the blog. When I realised that his birth anniversary was approaching then I planned to discuss his 100th song on his birth anniversary.

This less known, but wonderfully hummable song from “Punar Milan”(1964) is the 100th song of Gulshan Mehta aka Gulshan Bawra in the blog.

Gulshan Mehta has arrived India in 1947 braving post partition aftermath that saw his parents killed in front of him. In India, he joined Indian Railways as a booking clerk. He was supposed to be posted at Kota but fate saw him getting posted in Bombay. There he got the opportunity to get introduced to the movie world. He got his first break as a lyricist in Ravindra Dave’s “Satta Baazaar” (1959). He wrote a song Chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye in this movie. Bombay distributor Shantibhai Dave could not believe his eyes and ears that a 19 year old “Baawra” could write such lyrics. And from that day onwards he got named as Gulshan Bawra.

Though Gulshan Bawra was interested in becoming a lyricist, he would get offers of acting instead. And so he played small roles in several movies in addition of getting sporadic opportunities to write lyrics.

His fellow strugglers during his strugging days included Dharmendra and Manoj Kumar. This acquinatance came handy for Gulshan Bawra. While working as a goods clerk in Bombay, he would sometimes see sacks of wheat arriving from Punjab. It inspired him to write a poetry “mere desh ki dharti”. when he recited this poetry to Manoj Kumar during the making of “Upkaar” (1965), Manoj Kumar immediately included this song for his movie and the rest, as they say, was history.

Gulshan Bawra mostly worked with Kalyanji Anandji during 1960s. In 1970s, he began to work with R D Burman as well. Initially R D Burman tried to shake him off but once he goes used to him, they forget a long and successful partnership. It is interesting to realise that Gulshan Bawra wrote most of his lyrics (nearly 150) for R D Burman, more than twice the number of songs that he penned for Kalyanji Anandji.

Gulshan Bawra has also lip synced songs penned by himself. The most well known example is the “Zanjeer”(1973) song Deewaane hain deewaanon ko na ghar chaahiye .

I have read that Gulshan Bawra wrote only 250 songs in all. If that is the case then 40% of all his songs are now showcased in the blog and it is just a matter of time that the remaining 150 songs will also make it to the blog.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra who had guessed that I was trying to post Gulshan Bawra songs these days and he was regularly sending me lyrics of such songs. 🙂
